Project
1. Task
You need to form groups for the project. Each group should contain 2 or 3 students.
Each group need to complete one of the following three tasks:
(1.1) Select a full research paper from either KDD 2012 or SIGIR 2012, and
write a survey paper (literature review) about the topic of the selected
paper by following the references in that paper. The submitted survey
paper should have at least 5 full pages, including all figures, tables,
references and appendix (if any).

(1.2) Apply the method (or algorithm) in your selected paper to other
applications. For example, assuming that the original application in your
selected paper is text classification, you can apply the method in your
selected paper to image classification if you find that there exist similar
characteristics between text classification and image classification. The
submitted paper should have at least 5 pages. (10% bonus)
(1.3) Propose novel methods (or algorithms) to solve the problems in your
selected paper, and perform empirical comparison between your
proposed methods and the original method in your selected paper. The
submitted paper should have at least 5 pages. (20% bonus)
*Note: All papers should be written in English and adhere to the ACM proceedings
template. The submissions should be in PDF format, and you are highly
recommended to use LaTeX to typeset your papers. Please send the PDF files of your
papers to the TA before the deadlines.
2. Schedule
(2.1) Form groups and select papers
Deadline: Oct 21, 2012 (23:59pm).
Please send the group information and the selected paper to TA before this
deadline.
(2.2) Presentation
Nov 22, 2012 (8:00am – 12:30am), Rm 3-528, SEIEE Building
Five minutes for each student.
