or
Tuesday
September 4 7:00-8:15 PM
ARC Davies Hall 225
During the first meeting, students will receive a course outline, and course requirements will be explained.
Purpose:
This is a course designed to identify and examine major health issues of our time. Today, many health
problems are self-inflicted, the results of personal and social decisions, ignorance, and apathy. This course is
designed to counteract apathy, dispel myths, and to provide accurate information on which to make decisions
affecting individual and social health.
Health Science 300 satisfies the general education requirement of Life Long Learning Skills. The course
is transferable to 4-year institutions.
Course Goals: As a result of taking this course the student should be able to:
 define health and wellness.
 present and describe the six dimensions of health and wellness: physical, psychological,
spiritual, social, intellectual, and environmental.
 examine and evaluate the major issues and topics in health.
 increase awareness of the challenges of health.
 recognize and provide information to help develop self-efficacy.
In order to achieve these goals several instructional methods will be used. The class will utilize a
Telecourse Guide, a Textbook, and Video Programs. The Telecourse Guide provides an overview and
learning objectives for 26 lessons. Also included in the Telecourse Guide are lesson assignments and focus
points regarding textbook readings, as well as video segment points to help you through the video presentations.
Finally, the Telecourse Guide provides individual health plans and enrichment opportunities to help the student
apply what they have learned to their own health.
The Textbook examines the six dimensions of health in detail. There are 20 Chapters in the Textbook
involving the physical, emotional, intellectual, social, spiritual, and environmental aspects of health and
wellness. At the end of each Chapter there are Critical Thinking Questions which you will answer.
Finally, the Video Programs provide a correlation between the Study Guide and the Textbook.
TheVideo Programs are critical to the student’s total understanding of the material. Most students view the
Video Programs on cable TV. The videotapes can also be viewed in the following locations:

Video Rental Program:
The Learning Resource is now able to provide telecourse videos on both VHS and DVD. This allows us
to increase our capacity to serve students, and we are increasing our DVD capacity to serve students ondemand. Students will still be required to call the Telecourse Rental Hotline—558-2361 and leave the same
information as before. There is generally a one-day turnaround time for processing. Important: Students may
now rent VHS or DVD course sets for $20 per semester. Students pay $20 up front. If they do not return the
media, a library hold will be placed on their academic record.
