A student must apply for a Field Experience or In-School placement the semester immediately preceding the semester in which they
intend to do the experience. No student will be allowed to take part in any type of In-School or Field Experiences, e.g., EDSE 306,
EDSE 406, & EDTE 221L in the School of Education without a current Character & Fitness Form, FBI/Fingerprint Clearance, &
Washington State Patrol on file. All field placements from Teacher Education require students to apply by filling out a “Field Placement
Request Form.” All in-school experience placements from Special Education require students to complete an “In-School Placement
Student Information Form.” It is the candidate’s responsibility to stay current on their fingerprinting.

Appeal Clause for Transfer Students:
Transfer students need to make an appointment with the Certification Office to fill out the necessary paperwork to open a file. Students
who transfer into the Special Education program with most of Level I requirements completed may begin taking courses in Level II.
However, students cannot apply to be officially admitted into the Special Education program until one course in Special Education
(EDSE) at Gonzaga University has been successfully completed.

LEVEL IV: CERTIFICATION- See the Certification Officer to complete required certification paperwork.
Completion of 105 credit program. Must complete a minimum of 128 semester credits to complete degree.
It is the student’s responsibility to meet with their Special Education and/or SOE advisor at least once each
semester.
A student must apply for a Field Experience or In-School placement the semester immediately preceding the
semester in which they intend to do the experience. Prior to beginning a Field Experience a current Character &

Fitness form, FBI/Fingerprint Clearance, and Washington State Patrol Clearance must be on file in the
Certification Office. It is the candidate’s responsibility to stay current on their fingerprinting.
Student Teaching for elementary certification requires one full semester. A student must apply for student
teaching early during the semester immediately preceding the semester in which they intend to student teach.
Specific criteria for admissions are required and are available from the Teacher Education department. Among
these requirements are:
At least a 2.5 G.P.A. overall
G.P.A. in Major determined by academic department
3.0 G.P.A. in EDTE courses
Positive evaluations from the faculty in the major
Positive evaluations from the education faculty
Elementary and secondary candidates must complete all Teacher Education (EDTE) courses and EDSE 451,
EDSE 452, and EDSE 465 before Student Teaching. The State requires the student to have earned a “C” grade or
higher on all course work used for an endorsement. or for teacher certification.
It is strongly recommended that candidates do not plan to take additional coursework, work-study, or
outside employment while student teaching.
Placements will be made in the greater Spokane area schools, or within a 25-mile radius of Spokane.

specific questions about the teacher certification program please contact your advisor.
It is the student’s responsibility to stay in contact with the certification office regarding the ever-changing
Washington State certification guidelines. It is also the student’s responsibility to keep in close contact with
the Special Education Advisor.
