Student Report Name of the University: Pécsi Tudományegyetem / University of Pecs Exchange semester: Spring, 2013 I. PRACTICAL INFORMATION Before leaving Norway - When and how did you receive information from the exchange university? I received information on email in the end of November - Any difficulties in preparing (application, housing, contact, courses, etc)? The overview of courses I could choose came a littlebit late, but everything else was easy. Travel - How did you travel to your destination? Any problems? I took the plane from Gardermoen (Oslo) to Budapest. From Budapest to Pecs did I take a minivan called travel4you. This cost around 210 NOK, pick you up at the airport and drive you to the door in Pecs. You can order this from travel4you.hu and its recommended to do. Housing - Was housing provided by the university, or did you have to find your own housing? I was offered to live at Borzokany collegium, but I rented an apartment instead. I rented an apartment because the information about housing came late from the school, and I didn’t know about the standard. I found an apartment, by writing on “ANSA Pecs” Facebook page, and was offered a place to live. I lived in a very nice place for around 2000 NOK a month. - What support did you receive from the school in locating housing? - Any special issues or good ideas for prospective students? Costs - Approximately how much per month did you spend on rent, books, food, transportation, and other personal expenses? Rent Books Food Transport Other NOK 2000 NOK 20 NOK 750 NOK 200 NOK 200 Hungary is a very cheep place, and its possible to live for 3-4000 a month. You live very good for this price. Culture and language - Did you have any language problems with the faculty or other students? The regular Hungarian student don’t speak good English, but in the international line ( like BBA on BI) did the Hungarian students speak good English. All my teatchers spoke good English. - How were the possibilities to experience the country and the culture? Pecs was Europe´s culture capital in 2010, so you could see a lot of Hungarian culture in this city. Almost every weekend from April was it a form for a festival in the city. The student organization also organized a trip to places around Hungary and Pecs every weekend. Hungary is a very cheep country, so it’s easy for you to travel around on your own. Cultural and social effects from the exchange experience - How do you think the exchange experience will affect you from a cultural and social point of view? - How do you think the exchange experience influences your future career possibilities? II. ABOUT THE SCHOOL Please describe: - The school and its surroundings (give a short summary) The school was located in an old castle like building in the city centre near to the library. In the school yard was it a café who served some food and drinks. Alcohol and softdrinks - Current faculty divisions and special areas The school have 10 different faculty´s around the city. Approx. number of students (graduate and undergraduate) and number of exchange student It is around 29000 students in all faculty´s together Course registration - Were you able to register for courses before arrival? No - If not, when did you register? Any difficulties? We had to register for class 2,5 week into the semester. You was able to try the different courses before you decided for what kind of course you wanted to choose. The faculty was good prepared for our arrival. - Did the school’s students participate in the reception of the exchange students? They gave every Erasmus student an own mentor, who could help you through the semester. - Describe the introduction week? The introduction weekend was a weekend with a lot of happenings at night for all students. The International Office - Is there an international office? Yes - As an exchange student, did you receive sufficient and relevant information? In English? All student got access to the school web after 3 weeks. The pages was mostly in Hungarian, and the info we got on mail was just in Hungarian. Promoting BI and Norway - What kind of activities were you involved in to promote exchange to Norway at your exchange university? Every Wednesday had 2-3 countries make a presentation about their country and serve food from your country for the other exchange students. This was a popular event, because you could eat food from all around the world. I was in Pecs with two Norwegian students form Agder. We served Norwegian spekeskinke, hotdogs, mashed potatoes and akkevitt. Social activities - How was your relationship with native students? Didn’t have so much contact with the native students. - How was the relationship among the exchange students? - The relationship between the exchange students was very good. I got friends for life. - Is there a student organization, and if so, are the exchange students a part of it? Was no organization we could be member of - Are there any special activities and gatherings for exchange students? It was activities and parties almost every day III. ACADEMICS In the classroom - Describe the teaching style. Class one time a week, homework, midterm and final exam. - Language of instruction? Any problems? Instructions was in English, so it was no problems - How would you evaluate the level of study in relationship to the level at BI? It was easier in hungary than in Norway - Is the teaching primarily practical or theoretical? Courses was 50/50 practical and theoretical - Did professors use cases, group work or lectures (or a combination)? A combination off all three - How is the workload compared to that at BI? The workload was smaller compered to BI - Describe the relationship between professors and students. The professors was open to answer questions after class, and since we had classes of 30-40 people did the professors learn your name. you got a feeling of knowing the professor. - Describe the relationship between the students in the classroom. Mostly was the exchange students together. Course materials - Describe the course materials used (books/literature, online articles, PowerPoint, etc). We didn’t have original books in any courses. The course material was photocopy or PowerPoint. - In which language were the course materials? English - How do you estimate the level of the course materials in comparison to BI? The photocopies was copies of books that could be used in BI - Were materials used for detailed knowledge or a broad overview of a subject? Material was used for detailed knowledge. Exams - Was the exam based on the course materials or on the lectures? Both The courses evaluated by: o Final exam o Mid-term exam o Small assignments and/or papers o Presentations o Group work o Class participation/debates Library and technology - Do students have easy access to the library and its resources? The economic faculty was near to a new and very nice library. - Were computers provided around campus/in the library? If you want a computer to do your schoolwork on you need to bring your own. The computers in school and library was just for surfing on internet. - How is technology used in teaching or to distribute information? The homework was to analyse a company of your own choice based on the weeks reading We was divided into groups of four and and had to make a presentation about something in the news every week. This was the course I learned most of. Through the semester did we have to deliver 3 big projects. A good course. Learned a lot about analysing a firm Nice teacher. Had homework every week. Hungarian is a hard language to learn.
