Meetings First Wednesdays 12:30-1:30 – Janice will schedule on November 2, December
7, January 4.
Topics:
I)
Assessment
A) Repeat of Ashley’s findings was not presented at the Fall Critical Thinking
Institute since there was an abundance of sessions and attendance was a
concern. The proposal to present a follow-up to look more closely at
assessment data during All College Day on October 25 was accepted:
1) Title: Quality Enhancement: Taking a Closer Look at the Assessment Data
2) Description: How close are we to achieving the goal of improving our
students' ability to think critically? Take a closer look at data that have
been collected, participate in the discussion aimed at understanding the
data, and help strategize for the fifth and final year of SPC's Quality
Enhancement Plan.
3) Presenter(s): Ashley Hendrickson, David Monroe, Matthew Bodie, Janice
Thiel
4) Time/Sessions: Session I – 8:30am-9:45am
5) Room Location: SS 162
6) Capacity: 50
7) Janice will touch-base with AnaMarie Root to confirm the time and
location, and then we will send out a heads-up message to QEC
members along with assessment documents for preview on October 18.
8) Goal: To review data and make recommendations for the next year.
9) We will have a planning meeting on Friday, October 21, 1:00-2:00 p.m.,
Epi-Services, Room 217
B) SACS Working Group
1) Next meetings are scheduled for:
(a) Thursday, October 6, 2:30-3:30 p.m., EpiCenter – 1-324
(b) Wednesday, November 30, 2:30-3:30 p.m., EpiCenter – 1-324
2) Recommendations
(a) Establish methods for maintaining lists of those assigned primary
responsibilities (e.g., curriculum developers)
(b) Revisit college goals (consider workforce)
(c) Improve efficiencies of maintaining faculty lists and documenting
qualifications/credentials
C) Assessment Rubric for Critical Thinking (ARC)
1) ARC and Ethics CTAP assignment – Cameshia Ware has acknowledged
her awareness of the assessment and inquired about the location of the
CTAP which David responded to. Janice sent a reminder to the faculty:

2) ARC Scoring Workshop
(a) Friday, November 18, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
(b) District Office Consular Conference Room DO 102.
(c) Ashley will facilitate with Maggie Tymms and Jesse Coraggio’s
assistance.
(d) Janice will send invitations to the current Faculty Champions and
those Ethics faculty involved.
(e) David will then forward to the rest of the Ethics faculty.
(f) Breakfast munchies, lunch, and snacks to be determined.
D) Critical Thinking Assessment Test (CAT)
1) The report from the 6/3/11 workshop is complete, and Ashley has received
results from Tennessee Tech.

1) Janice emailed Susan Demers on 9/12/2011 about meeting to discuss
assessing student activities for Ethics faculty.
2) Dave is working with Maureen Mahoney about holding a “Great Debate.”
3) Janice and Ashley have been invited to attend the Student Life and
Leadership Meeting on Wednesday, October 5, 2:30 p.m., EpiCenter,
Room 1-450, and the Associate Provosts teleconference on Tuesday,
October 11, 10:00 a.m. Goal of meetings: To increase QEC Team
awareness of campus (and online) activities related to critical thinking
and to capitalize on opportunities to collect data.
Professional Development
A) Quality Enhancement Committee Meeting
1) Matthew and Ashley’s presentations from the 9/2/2011 QEC meeting are
now posted via the Gateway Website. The link can be forwarded to
QEC members with the announcement and materials about the session
at All College Day.
B) Critical Thinking Institutes

(b) Attended by over 150 faculty, staff, and students.
(c) The MIRA Laptop and Electronic Arts Ensemble under the
direction of Jeff Donovick performed:
(i) Elizabeth Baker – piano
(ii) Chelsie Smith – voice, laptop, Abelton with Novation
Launch Pad
(iii) Bobby Eldridge – DJ, Native Instruments Traktor (sic)
(iv) Dustin Brause – laptop, Native Maschine (sic)
(d) Clearwater Campus Provost, Dr. Stan Vittetoe, welcomed the
attendees.
(e) The plenary session, including a skit, was conducted by Cher
Gauweiler, Bill Hemme, Ginny Price, and Matthew Bodie.
(f) Janice and Li-Lee Tunceren presented the fundamental and
powerful concepts of modeling and being explicit when teaching
for critical thinking.
(g) Most break-out sessions went as planned. One had to be cancelled
because the presenters misunderstood their session time.
(h) The results of the end-of-the-day discipline-specific discussions
are available via the Gateway Website. The group for education
was not attended and Janice has followed up with Cher
Gauweiler and Nancy Watkins about filling in that piece.
(i) Oasis catering went well. There were a few left overs, but we have
not been charged for those.
(j) The Gateway Website has video and handouts of various sessions.
(k) The follow-up evaluation has been sent to attendees (see attached).
(l) Janice will send attendees their Certificates of Attendance and also
include thank you letters to presenters and other helpers. She will
also submit an article for the Blue & White newsletter.
2) Narrowing the Gulf – March 29-30, 2012. Edna Ross of Louisville
University is interested/available to present the key note and meet with
the Faculty Champions, and possibly conduct an additional break-out
session. Edna is considering her expenses and will send a description
and her fee request to Janice.
Faculty Champions
1) 2011 Faculty Champions
(a) College of Business and Engineering Technology are not yet
complete with Spring 2011 deliverables. Janice will follow-up
with them.
(b) Summer deliverables are complete for: Humanities and Public
Safety.
2) 2010 Faculty Champions
(a) Medical Lab Technology and Natural Science are not yet complete
with Fall 2010 deliverables. Janice will follow-up with them.
3) Final Survey for 2009 and 2010 Faculty Champions – Janice will work
with Ashley to develop this.

IV)
4) CETL-CT Bridge Team
(a) Janice Thiel, Li-Lee Tunceren, Bill Hemme, Matthew Bodie, Cher
Gauweiler, Ginny Price presented the opening general session for
the Fall Critical Thinking Institute. Janice will follow-up about
strategizing ways to sustain the critical thinking initiative within
CETL.
