After beginning learners learn phonics, they can read words. They can also spell words. Phonics makes speaking and reading easier. 2. What is phonics? What are the components of phonics? Phonics is sounds of letters. The components of phonics are vowels and consonants. Vowels are a, e, i, o, u. Consonants are the other letters. There are some components: (1) Consonant+vowel (ma, me, mi, mo, mu) (2) Vowel+consonant (am, em, im, om, um) (3) Consonant+vowel+consonant (bam, bem, bim, bom, bum) (4) Consonant diagraphs (ch, sh, th, ph, ng, ck, gh, wr, kn…) (5) Blends (br, cr,sm…) 3. Please give an example of phonics activity that Ross applied in the class. (1) Eye spy (看圖說字): There is a picture, and a word beginning with C. Then the student say ‘’Cloud.’’ (2) Scatter gories (給一個字母寫字): Please say words beginning with C, and words related to animal, country, clothes. Then student say’’ Cat. Chinese. Coat.’’ (3) Fill in the blanks (填空式單字): _a_e, c_t, b_ _k 4. How to teach vocabulary? What are the components of vocabulary that we teach students? (1) We can teach vocabulary in these ways: (a) Use pictures (b) Use synonyms to learn the vocabulary which is long. (big= large= enormous) (2) The components of vocabulary that we teach students are: (a) Part of speech: noun, verb, adverb, adjective, conjunction, interjection, verb+preposition… (cat, run, slowly, cute, and/but, amazing/wow, look for/take out/ take up….) (b) The meaning of vocabulary (c) Pronounce words correctly (d) Spelling (e) Grammar label
