Meeting the test of an acceptable Honors College Community Engagement Project
1. The project when completed will make measurable progress on an adaptive challenge for a
community in Kansas or beyond.
2. In most cases it will be appropriate to identify a community-based organization that the
student will partner with to complete the project.
3. The project will provide the student with ample opportunities to exhibit leadership
competencies including diagnosing the situation, managing self, energizing others, and
intervening skillfully.
4. The project is feasible.
5. Safety and legal issues have been addressed.
6. The project has been approved by a faculty mentor(s), the Director of the Honors College, the
Honors College Advisory Council, and if appropriate, the community-based organization the
student will be partnering with.
7. The project design, execution and assessment will be worthy of 3 graded upper-division
university honors credits. University policy stipulates that approximately 45 hours of work
per credit hour per semester is the expectation for university credit. This suggests that the
entire project including design, execution and assessment should involve approximately 135
hours of work on the part of the student.
Please provide concise yet complete responses to each of the following items below.
Your Proposal should address each item separately and in order. Each response should be concise yet
thorough.
Project Description and Benefit
1. Describe the project and the benefits that will result from it. (500 word maximum)
Leadership Competencies
2. Diagnosing Situation: Describe the planning that occurred as the project was designed. Be sure
to describe the adaptive challenge the project will address and any possible obstacles you may
encounter while completing it. How confident are you that adequate diagnosis has been done?
3.
Managing Self: How will knowledge of your strengths, vulnerabilities and triggers help you
complete the project? How will you manage them? Can you handle yourself when things go
wrong? Can you deal with difficult people and situations? Can you adapt when necessary?
4. Energizing Others: Leadership involves working with others. Your project cannot be something
you do by yourself. Describe how you will mobilize others to help you complete the project.
How many people will you need to complete the project? What roles will they play? How will
you recruit and mobilize them?
5. Intervene Skillfully: Provide a description and justification for the intervention you plan to
deploy? Describe how the project will result in measurable progress being made on the adaptive
challenge identified. How will you assess the effectiveness of your intervention?
Logistical Needs
6. Resources Needed: Will there be any supplies, materials or other resources needed to complete
the project? If yes, please list them and present your strategy for their acquisition.
7. Preliminary Cost Estimates: Please note that while the Honors College will try to be supportive
of resource needs, budget constraints and state law limits its ability to do so. The student
should do everything necessary to keep costs to a minimum.
8. Safety Issues: Are there any safety concerns that might arise during the planning and execution
of your project? If yes, list them here and indicate your strategy for minimizing them.
Project Timeline
9. Project Timeline: Think of your project in terms of distinct steps and the order in which they
will occur and list them with a tentative timeline for completion. For example, the first step
might be to raise funds, the second step might be to solicit volunteers, the third might be to
execute the project, and the fourth might be to evaluate and assess the project.
