Honors College Community Engagement Project Proposal Honors College Vision Statement: The Honors College at Emporia State University aspires to be recognized as a significant catalyst for the improvement of communities in Kansas and beyond. Honors College Mission Statement: The Honors College at Emporia State University will prepare students to be agents of change for the common good in their respective communities. This proposal and the project described herein when completed will satisfy the requirements for CW 510 Honors Community Engagement Practicum and for graduation “With Honors” from the Honors College. This proposal supports Goals 1 and 2 of the University’s Strategic Plan and the Vision and Mission Statements of the Honors College. The project when completed will make measurable progress on an adaptive challenge for a community in Kansas or beyond. 2. In most cases it will be appropriate to identify a community-based organization that the student will partner with to complete the project. 3. The project will provide the student with ample opportunities to exhibit leadership competencies including diagnosing the situation, managing self, energizing others, and intervening skillfully. 4. The project is feasible. 5. Safety and legal issues have been addressed. 6. The project has been approved by a faculty mentor(s), the Director of the Honors College, the Honors College Advisory Council, and if appropriate, the community-based organization the student will be partnering with. 7. The project design, execution and assessment will be worthy of 3 graded upper-division university honors credits. University policy stipulates that approximately 45 hours of work per credit hour per semester is the expectation for university credit. This suggests that the entire project including design, execution and assessment should involve approximately 135 hours of work on the part of the student. Diagnosing Situation: Describe the planning that occurred as the project was designed. Be sure to describe the adaptive challenge the project will address and any possible obstacles you may encounter while completing it. How confident are you that adequate diagnosis has been done? 3. Managing Self: How will knowledge of your strengths, vulnerabilities and triggers help you complete the project? How will you manage them? Can you handle yourself when things go wrong? Can you deal with difficult people and situations? Can you adapt when necessary? 4. Energizing Others: Leadership involves working with others. Your project cannot be something you do by yourself. Describe how you will mobilize others to help you complete the project. How many people will you need to complete the project? What roles will they play? How will you recruit and mobilize them? 5. Intervene Skillfully: Provide a description and justification for the intervention you plan to deploy? Describe how the project will result in measurable progress being made on the adaptive challenge identified. How will you assess the effectiveness of your intervention? Logistical Needs 6. Resources Needed: Will there be any supplies, materials or other resources needed to complete the project? If yes, please list them and present your strategy for their acquisition. 7. Preliminary Cost Estimates: Please note that while the Honors College will try to be supportive of resource needs, budget constraints and state law limits its ability to do so.
