Sophomore Servant Leadership Positions
Peer Mentors/Pre-O Retreat
Although each position has its unique character and commitments, both positions offer ample
opportunities for you to:
 Serve your community by offering your gifts and talents
 Grow deeper in your faith by learning new ways to pray, exploring your spirituality, and
intentional faith sharing
 Meet a diverse group of people who hold similar values
 Discover more about who you are and who you were created to become
Peer Mentors
As a UMPM, you dedicate your sophomore year to growing in your own faith while learning to
be a model of faith for others. You will gain leadership skills by living faith-based servant
leadership, building community, and becoming more involved in University Ministry and faith
life at USD. One-on-one mentorship with new students as they go through the transition into
college is an essential role for Peer Mentors. Other responsibilities include coordinating social
and service activities for Mentors and Mentees such as bowling, day at the beach, visiting AIDS
patients in Tijuana and serving meals at a local shelter. Peer Mentors are especially invited to
serve as Liturgical Ministers and help people feel welcome in the community at Founders
Chapel.
If selected, you must be available for the following:
Spring meetings: Tuesdays 12:15-1:15pm, April 1 & 15
& Sunday, April 27, 8-9pm (Between 7pm and 9pm Founders Masses)
Commissioning: May 13, 1 pm
August training: August 26-29
Welcome Weekend: August 29-31
Pre-O Retreat Leaders
As a Pre-O Retreat leader, you are the first face of USD, inviting over 70 first-year students into
the University Ministry community. You welcome them with open arms, while also growing in
your own faith. On retreat, you serve as a small-group leader and facilitate various other
activities on retreat. Through these opportunities, you have the chance to re-live your own PreO experience and to give back to others by sharing God’s love. Although the retreat ends as
school begins, Pre-O leaders continue to aid students through their transition to college and
invite them into a faith community where they can belong, believe, and become.
If selected, you must be available for the following:
Spring Meetings: Tuesdays from 1 – 2 pm
April 1, 8, 15, 22, and 29
Commissioning: May 13, 1 pm
August training: August 23-26, 2014
Pre-Orientation Retreat: August 27 - 29, 2014
Students of all different faith traditions are invited to apply!
