pearl mussel
The sex life of the freshwater pearl
mussel is not an intimate affair. Male
mussels release a cloud of sperm which
the female breathes in. The sperm
fertilizes her eggs which brood on the gill
pouch for a short time before the larvae or glochidia - are released into the water.
Once in the water, the fish breathe them
in, and they attach to the fish gills in a
process known as "encysting". And there
they remain, for between six to nine
months, growing a shell and causing no
problem to their hosts until they finally
drop off into the river bed as juveniles.
