ARDEN MIDDLE SCHOOL PHYSICAL EDUCATION 2014-15 Mission Statement The physical education program will empower the student with the ability to demonstrate, understand, and appreciate skills and wholesome behaviors that contribute to a healthy lifestyle. 1) WELCOME The PE Department’s philosophy is for our students to observe and experience a wide variety of lifetime activities. We strive to help students to become aware of their own physical fitness and wellness in terms of cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength & endurance, flexibility, body composition, injury prevention and care. All of the physical education experiences will aid students in developing a positive self-image and motivation to seek individual excellence. We encourage students in their social development through the appreciation of individual differences and group cooperation. 2) CURRICULUM –STANDARDS BASED The physical education program is divided into units; each unit is usually three to four weeks in length implementing the California State Physical Education Standards. The following are some of the activities that will be offered: aerobics, basketball, dance, disc sports, fitness, flag football, team handball, street hockey, paddle tennis, soccer, strength training, softball, track and field, volleyball, yoga, tumbling, and plyometrics/agility training 3) UNIFORMS: Regular Arden Physical Education uniforms or plain black (minimal 7’ inseam) athletic shorts and a plain white, or forest green shirt. (Minor labels, i.e. Nike, Adidas, etc are ok) ZERO TOLERANCE FOR NON-SUITS: Excessive non-suits will lower Effort and Citizenship grades 4) LOCKER ROOM: Responsible, respectful, safe and appropriate behavior are expected at all times 5) BASKETS and LOCKS: All students will be issued a basket Combination locks only. Please, no key locks. 6) EXPECTED BEHAVIORS: Be in the locker room when the tardy bell rings. Be seated on your roll call number 5 minutes after the tardy bell rings. Be quiet and ready to listen to daily instructions. Be ready to participate to the best of your ability. Wait behind RED Line until bell rings. 7) ABSENCES When students are absent for any reason, arrangements need to be made your instructor for make-ups. 8) TARDY POLICY Students must be in the locker room before the tardy bell rings and on their roll numbers before attendance is taken. Excessive Tardies will result in Administrative consequences. 9) 10) MEDICAL NOTES: A signed and dated note from a parent is required to be excused for the day. A signed and dated note from a parent can excuse a student for up to 5 days. A Doctor’s note is required to be excused after 5 days. Students will be expected to still dress out for class and work within their limitations. STANDARDS-BASED GRADING: MOVEMENT SKILLS MOVEMENT KNOWLEDGE FITNESS SKILLS FITNESS KNOWLEDGE SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT ACADEMIC: Academic grades will be determined by class participation, Summative assessments, and Social and Personal behavior. Students will earn a letter grade of A,B,C ,I on Progress Reports and A-F. EFFORT: Effort will be based on active participation, being prepared, risk-taking, perseverance, commitment to the activity, initiative, and following directions. Graded on based on 4,3,2,1 Rubric. CITIZENSHIP: In general terms An outstanding (O) student always… A satisfactory (S) student usually… An Needs Improvement (NI) Does not… An unsatisfactory (U) student rarely… …is courteous, conscientious, punctual, respectful, responsible and safe with peers, teachers, administration, and support staff.
