Supplementary Readings: Any of the ATV magazines that are applicable to the class.
Required supplies: All necessary tools will be provided. Students will be allowed to use
their own tools/equipment if needed. Students need to bring consumables: gas, oil,
gaskets, etc.
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course will teach fundamental skills for maintenance and repair of an All-Terrain
Vehicle. Only one type of ATV will be the focus of the class, examples being: 4wheelers, dirt bikes, hovercrafts, etc. Engine tune-up, lubrication, clutch and belt (if
applicable), transmission troubleshooting, tire and wheel repair, alignment, and other
basic problems encountered during operation along with safe shop procedures.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF GOALS:
1. Students will understand the basic operating principles and safety procedures of
ATV maintenance and repair.
2. Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to demonstrate
a basic proficiency of ATV maintenance and repair.
3. Students will be able to order replacement parts and understand how to install
them.
STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES/OBJECTIVES:

3. Understand the engine’s systems and how they operate:
a. electrical
b. mechanical
c. cooling
d. ignition
e. lubrication
4. Understand the function of individual small engine parts
5. Partially disassemble/assemble an ATV engine and carburetor
6. Properly clean and repair mechanical/electrical ATV parts
7. Perform basic ATV service techniques
8. Properly adjust carburetors for idle and performance
9. Understand and service the fuel injection system if equipped.
INSTRUCTIONAL METHODS:
Students will be exposed to the basics of ATV repair through lecture and discussion,
hands-on exercises/experience and the use of handouts/videos when appropriate.
Students will also receive individual instruction when necessary.

COURSE POLICIES:
Students will be expected to attend all classes and abide by all rules of safety while in the
auto shop facility. Students will be expected to exercise maturity, safety and common
sense while using tools and operating machinery during class.
EVALUATION:
This is a pass/fail course. Students will be awarded points as listed below. Students must
receive 140 points or more in order to receive a passing grade.
