Course Description & Objectives: Design process, discussions and project assignments will be in various scales dealing
with forms and spaces generated by human needs. This course will study and analyze the
built environment relative to human activity and function.
1.
To understand that human perception of the environment is based solely on information
received through our sensory receptors. This sensory information is then analyzed or
organized in our minds by comparing it with all of our past experiences.
2. To introduce basic analysis techniques and the design process as ways of assessing and
shaping the built environment.
3.
To explore the dynamic relationships between physical design and human responses
and to develop an awareness of how space can affect human activity and comfort.
4.
To develop an understanding of design elements and principles such as light, texture,
scale, proportion, movement, etc.
5.
To introduce a variety of design experiences that will help students understand how the
design process can be used to discover innovative, functional and aesthetically pleasing
solutions to human problems and needs.
6. To reinforce documentation of the design process.
Course Competencies: 1. Awareness of the critical role played by sensory perception in understanding and dealing
with both the natural and built environment.
2. Understanding of three-dimensional spaces and their physical and psychological effects.
3. Understanding of some of the fundamental elements and principles of design, such as
form, space, scale, proportion, etc.
4.
Development of analysis and design methodologies through lectures, discussions, and
hands-on design projects.
5.
Development of oral and graphic techniques for presenting individual design solutions.
6.
Reinforcing skills in graphic (freehand/manual drafting/CAD) and written documentation.
Projects/Esquisse Sketching:
There will be a variety of main projects, & esquisse/sketching assignments.
Supplies and materials will be discussed with each assignment. Reuse and recycling of project
materials are emphasized. A live project may be scheduled into this course.
Design Process Documentation:
Students will develop their design ideas with freehand sketches and design thought
notations as a way to document their personal design experiences and process. Your focus
should be to consciously record the evolutionary growth achieved throughout each project
in this course. Maintain and organize these sketches and documentation as they will be the
evidence of your growth and achievements in this course experience.
