Re:
Request for Immediate Repairs and Maintenance due to health and safety concerns
Thank you for taking the time to meet with us on August 22nd to discuss facilities issues in the
College of Education and thank you for taking the time to walk through some of our facilities to
see their current state. As a result of our discussions that day, the list of items we are asking for
immediate assistance with maintenance and repair is noted here. We have organized them by
priority, but we are flexible in terms of the order that they can be accomplished.
I also want to let you know that we are in the process of making a separate request to allow us to
conduct a project with the Hawaii Arts Alliance and our art education students to paint murals
related to the history of education on the exteriors of UHS1 and UHS2 buildings. As you are
aware, the paint is badly peeling on both of these facilities and assuming we receive permission
to conduct the art project, the old paint would still need to be removed and probably a primer
applied. We are anticipating a possible Spring 2012 project.
Thank you again for your assistance. We look forward to working with you to expedite the
process to complete these repair and maintenance needs (see following pages).
COE Building Repair & Maintenance
PRIORITY 1
Wist Annex 1
 Second exit in WA 1-103
UHS #1
 Interior
o Paint peeling (lead?)
o Electrical service is inadequate to serve current needs
o Windows do not function properly; there is no AC
o Wooden supports for air conditioners rotted through
o Floors have existing holes; other areas appear weak and unsafe
o Constant insect and rodent infestations – treatment needed
 Exterior
o ADA compliant entry
o Walls and windows on the Metcalf side need replacing due to termite damage
o Paint peeling (lead?)
o Rain gutters replaced
o Doors replaced due to termite damage
o Roof appears to need resurfacing
UHS #2
 Interior
o Electrical service inadequate to serve current needs. Even ceiling fans do not
work. When maintenance came to repair they would not repair or replace because
the current wiring is inadequate.
o Floor on west side of building will not bear weight and is in danger of collapse
o Throughout the building: there are lots of holes in the floor and wall, so bugs and
other crawlies enter on a regular basis.
o Doors internal and external need replacing due to termite damage
o Light fixtures arc and need replacing
o Toilets inoperable
o Constant insect and rodent infestations
 Exterior
o Roof repair/replace
o Roof overhang on west steps rotted and falling
o Rain gutters replaced
o East side walls and windows need replacing due to termite damage
o West side of building rooms are not usable in the afternoon due to heat. Blinds are
inoperable. Need heat reducing awnings, insulation, etc or AC
o Paint peeling (lead?)
o The Diamond Head/makai and ‘ewa/makai corners of the building having failing
foundations.
o Entrance steps (all four entrances) are termite eaten and the edges of the top
landings are chipped and crumbling. The design of the railings makes it difficult
for a person to grab them in case a person needs the support. The damage to the
railing (splintered in places) makes it dangerous to grab.
PRIORITY 2
Henke 334 and 335
 Office door splitting at base – needs new door and kick plate
 Ceiling leaking – facilities has provided buckets for use in the rooms!
Castle Memorial Hall
 Structural: middle part of building is settling; floors are uneven, unsafe
 Water and sewer
o Low to no water pressure
o Toilets leak and overflow
o Floor drains need clearing; overflows result in standing water on the floor
 Roof
o Many shingles missing resulting in damage/leakage
 Floors
o Public area floors need sanding and refinishing
 Windows do not open/lock; some are painted shut; some have wood jams serving as locks;
Termite damage on some window sills
 Lanai railings have termite damage; potential safety issue
 Replace pillars and missing covered walkway
 Repair and make fountains operable
