Student impressions of LIS core curriculum LIS Faculty Meeting 21 Nov 2014, compiled by RG (updated 24 Jan 2015 with data from 2 late midterms) As part of their midterm, LIS 650 students over the past three years were given this question: 2) (3 points) Conduct a limited SWOT/PEST analysis (one item per letter) of the UH LIS Program. Propose and defend two changes to the core curriculum (the courses every student is required to take). One change should be a proposed addition to the core, and the other should propose that an existing required course be removed (or significantly changed). Each change you propose should be explicitly linked to your SWOT/PEST analysis, with reference to data or published research as appropriate, the mission of the LIS Program, and how your proposals will add value for students. Conclude by evaluating the SWOT/PEST approach itself. Most frequently suggested courses to add/remove from the core: Fall 2012 (27 students) Add/Change LIS 690 (or merge with other course): 9 LIS 687: 5 LIS 611: 4 LIS 683: 2 Remove/Change LIS 605: 5 LIS 610: 5 LIS 615: 4 LIS 650: 2 Fall 2013 (7 students) Add/Change LIS 690 (or merge with other course): 3 LIS 683: 2 LIS 612: 1 New LIS/ICS tech course: 1 Remove/Change LIS 615 (or merge with 650): 3 LIS 601 (or merge with 663): 2 LIS 605: 2 Fall 2014 (17 students) Add/Change LIS 687 (or merge with 685): 7 LIS 690 (or merge with other course): 5 LIS 611 (or merge with other course): 3 LIS 670 (or updated intro tech course): 2 Remove/Change LIS 615 (or merge with 650): 6 LIS 601 (or merge with 663/665): 5 LIS 605: 2 Six students who suggested merging 690 with another course chose 610, two chose 650 Two students across the three years suggested requiring research methods Two F12 students suggested adding 663, which we did the following semester One F14 student recommended requiring Vi and MB’s LIS 694 Planning and Developing Library Instruction, another recommended adding an instruction component to 601
