You won’t want to miss this – anything can happen and probably will! SEACOAST MEMORIAL LECTURE - Oct. 20 - 1:30 PM Durham Evangelical Church (upper level) Pre-eminent futurist Dr. Dennis L. Meadows, Professor Emeritus of Systems Management at UNH and President of the Laboratory for Interactive Learning, will discuss his long-term research on global sustainability and its future implications. An early environmental icon, Dr. Meadows made headlines as the leader of an MIT research team using computer simulation to evaluate potential effects of post-World-War-II geometric growth. The resultant celebrated 1972 report, The Limits to Growth, confirmed the conflict between Earth's physical capacity and modern human development, and has been highly influential in awakening and inspiring world efforts towards a sustainable society. Kittery Community Center Coordinator: Carol Selsberg (207)439-7957 September 16 – "The Innocence Project" – NH Law Prof. Buzz Scherr, leader of New Hampshire's Civil Liberties Union, and member of ACLU's National Board, is a forensic DNA authority. He will share his experiences while working with Barry Scheck's Innocence Project to exonerate innocent prisoners utilizing DNA testing. September 23 – "Citizenfour" – The 2014 awardwinning documentary recounts the story of Edward Snowden and the NSA Spy Scandal. Members will have the opportunity to discuss this shocker of a film following its presentation. September 30 – Secret Keepers – Our own Prof. Emeritus Doug Wheeler*, is currently at work on a spy novel and will share some of his vast knowledge of the history and impact of this profession. October 7 – A Climate of Hate – Despite Supreme Court Decisions such as 1954's Brown v. Board of Education and 1964's Civil Rights Act and the fact that the US has elected our first African-American President, race continues to be a significant issue in our Country. UNH Assoc. Sociology Prof. Cliff Brown will help us to understand the history and current social forces that continue to drive this issue. ************ WEDNESDAY PM — TRAVELS WITHOUT A SUITCASE Durham Community Church Coordinator: Carol Selsberg (207)439-7957 September 16 – Sarasota Surprises – Our own Claudia Gilmartin* will share her Sarasota Surprises. She has discovered a cornucopia of wonders on the west coast of Florida. September 23 – "Are We There Yet?" – Jim* and Carly* Hellen believe that the excitement of lifelong learning is contagious. They have shared four Road Scholar adventures with their grandchildren igniting enthusiasm for education and travel. September 30 –The Amazing Azores – Katy* and Dick* Fralick take us 2,000 miles from New England to the beautiful Azores Islands, located off the coast of Portugal. They recently returned to visit Terceira where they lived for over a year. We’ll learn about “estas ilhas bonitas” (these beautiful islands) through their experiences and stories. September 24 – Ms. Sportscaster – One of the first female sports anchors allowed in the men's locker room, Barbara Borin Franzoso, has hair-curling stories of how her gender changed the profession in the ‘70's. October 1 – "State of the Hurt" – As essential as their sports equipment, Dr. R. Harrington "fixes" the UNH sports teams, and will reveal the non-monetary “costs” of college sports not mentioned in the catalogs. He piloted one of the hundreds of US planes that flew over the battleship Missouri at the signing of the Peace Treaty in Tokyo Bay on September 2, 1945. Hear about his training, life on a carrier and the anticipation leading up to VJ Day. September 25 – Today’s Defenders – Hear stories from current servicemen -- America's 1% who have volunteered to defend the rest of us -- share their stories about multiple deployments in Afghanistan and Iraq. October 2 – WWII - The European Theater – ARA President, Bob Hylen will discuss historic elements of the war based on his research into this world changing conflict. October 9 – Veterans Administration Issues – Attorney Larry Vogelman leads the Legal Committee in support of the Veterans Law Project-Legal Boots on the Ground. As President of the New Hampshire Bar Association, Vogelman made veterans legal outreach a top priority during his term. Teaming up with Veterans Law Project, the organization is pursuing a major outreach effort to provide legal representation for veterans in need. ************ PROGRAMS ON DEMAND (PODS) ARA special interest groups arose from member requests for more informal and diverse opportunities for social activities. October 28 – Arab States – Jeannie Sowers is an Associate Professor of Political Science at UNH. Her research focuses on political change and environmental issues in the Middle East and North Africa. She holds a Ph.D. and M.A. from Princeton University and a B.A. from Harvard University. November 4 – Latin America Yesterday, Today Tomorrow – UNH Prof. Mary Malone, expert on Latin America, will present its many changes over the last decades while projecting this important region's future in the global family. October 29 – Unions Then and Now – We will be enlightened by Jay Ward, Political Director of New Hampshire’s State Employees Assn. (SEA/SEIU) Local 1984. November 5 – Minimum Wage Pain – Is there a low-wage crisis? What are the daily challenges of a minimum wage job? What can business afford in today's competitive business climate? Maggie Fogarty, Co-director of the American Friends Service Committee’s New Hampshire Program, and Jeff McLynch, Exec. Dir. of the New Hampshire Fiscal Policy Institute, share their knowledge and informed perspectives on the critical issue. October 29 – Where is My Family History Hiding and How Do I Find and Organize It? – How to efficiently find, explore, and capture your family history info. And, most importantly, we’ll learn how to organize it right from the start. Real examples will be used with live, on line illustrations. November 5 – It's All About the Stories Fascinating, Inspiring, Famous, Infamous, Even Scandalous – Examples of interesting stories and revelations, how they were discovered by the chain of researching, and an opportunity to share some of your own stories.
