Focus: Semicolons
Monday, September 21st
Rule #1: A semicolon can replace a period if the writer wishes to narrow the gap between two closely linked sentences.
Examples:
Call me tomorrow; you can give me an answer then.
We have paid our dues; we expect all the privileges listed in the contract.
Rule #2: Use a semicolon before such words and terms as namely, however, therefore, that is, i.e., for example, e.g., for
instance, etc., when they introduce a complete sentence. It is also preferable to use a comma after these words and terms.
Example:
Bring any two items; however, sleeping bags and tents are in short supply.
Circle the subjects and underline the verbs. Add correct punctuation to the sentences.
1. It is raining outside I will bring my umbrella with me.
2. Hopefully, the weather will change soon otherwise, the whole summer will go by without the sun shining.
3. She doesn't understand algebra therefore, she will probably not pass the math final.
4. We will play tennis tomorrow then we will go out for dinner.
Review from last week- rewrite and correct the sentence to make it parallel.
5. My father used to play first base in baseball quarterback in football and he used to play goalie on his soccer team.

Rule #3: Use a semicolon to separate units of a series when one or more of the units contain commas
Example: The conference has people who have come from Moscow, Idaho; Springfield, California; Alamo, Tennessee;
and other places as well.
Add the correct punctuation to the sentences.
1. He is traveling to Bangalore, India Manila, Philippines Tokyo, Japan.
2. The sandwich choices include tomato, bacon and lettuce cheese, ham and lettuce peanut butter and jelly.
3. The shirts were red, white and blue aqua, yellow, and white purple, yellow, and black.
4. John Taylor is survived by his son, Jack, of California his daughter, June, of Oregon his grandchild, Jill, also
of Oregon.
