Steps to Join ESL Classes at North Seattle College Step 1: Go to the Admissions and Registration office in the College Center building on the second floor, just inside the green double doors. At the Registration counter, you will apply to the college and be given a student number (SID). You must come in person. You cannot send someone to do this for you. The test is necessary for us to know your ESL level. The test is free. It usually takes about three hours. There are usually two or three tests offered each month, sometimes in the morning, or sometimes in the afternoon. If you are a total beginner in English you will be placed into level one and given an orientation letter by the Admissions and Registration staff. No test is required for level one students. (Level one students skip to Step 4). Step 2: When it is your scheduled time to take the ESL placement test, go to the NSCC Testing Center. The Testing Center is in the College Center building on the 2nd floor at the south end of campus, in room CC 2459C. Please arrive 10 minutes early. Official photo ID is required. (See Step 4 for acceptable forms of photo ID) Step 3: After the ESL placement test, you will receive a letter inviting you to an orientation. Step 4: When you come to the orientation, you will register for a class or classes. Bring the orientation letter, the completed registration form, and your photo ID with you. Acceptable forms of Photo ID are: NSCC student ID card Washington state ID card Washington state Driver’s License State ID, Driver’s License or Driver’s Permit from another U.S. state Green card (U.S. Permanent Resident Card) U.S. Passport Passport from another country (the Testing staff must be able to easily identify the information on the passport) All forms of photo ID must be in English (except for foreign passport). Tuition costs only $25 per quarter (11 weeks). To take ESL classes for $25 per quarter, you must have a green card, or be a refugee, or be an immigrant, or be a U.S. citizen.
