Common Expectations and Guidelines Distance learning courses are designed for highly motivated students who cannot or do not want to come to campus because of their work schedules, family needs or other reasons. Distance learning students can control their own schedules by working with the course materials at their convenience. However, this course is not self-paced; Class begins on Jan. 2, 2013 and ends on Jan. 15, 2013. In addition, regular assignments, quizzes, and exams are due on Sundays 11:59pm (except the final exam). Please see your course schedule and instructions posted on your class Website for your homework assignments and due dates. For more information on grading criteria, please see your course syllabus. Distance learning offers many different ways of learning. This course is fully online on the internet, therefore it does not require campus visit. Classes require internet access and involve online discussion and email submission and grading of student work. Self-assessment is a must for distance learning students taking this course. This class is not easy. It is rigorous and requires discipline. You will most likely have more readings and assignments than on-campus classes to assure that you will cover the same material as an equivalent on-campus class. You should expect to spend at least 8 hours a week on the successful completion of the class. Students are expected to follow instructions related to this class and to promptly communicate with me if they are having any difficulty with the class. You are also expected to complete and submit all assignments before their deadlines. No make-up exams are offered in this class. If you know now that you have a problem meeting any of the exam dates, please let me know during the first week of the class. There will be a 10-point deduction for each day your assignments being unreasonable late. Willfully copying homework and assignments and submitting them as your own will result in you receiving no credit for all assignments. At all times, you are expected to show respect when communicating online or participating in the discussion room. Page 4 of 6 Communication in this class is vital to its success. This class uses distance-learning platform for its course delivery. It has many excellent features that facilitate course communications. You will become familiar with these features as you become more familiar with this platform. Students can discuss their assignments on the “Discussion Board” under weekly assignments folder. Please do not talk about tests and quizzes on the “Discussion Board” before their due dates. If you have questions about them, please email me immediately. A typical week for me in this online class begins on Monday at 9:00am and ends on Friday at 9:00pm. During this time, you should expect that I would answer your emails within a 24-hour window. Please do not EMAIL me if you have questions from homework assignments or textbook; you should always post those questions on your weekly discussion boards, and you will get answers from there because your classmates might need those answers too. Rules, Disciplinary and Other Issues College policies on unethical behavior, absences and other issues apply to this class. Please consult the Official Catalog of NSCC for further information. I am here to help you succeed in this course, so please read the syllabus, the class schedule and instructions related to this course carefully and let me know how I can help.
