Review the syllabus and come to class with any questions you still might have about the class.

Go to the bookstore and buy the books if you do not already have them. You particularly need
the code to access Academic Connections Online, so if you do not already have this book, buy a
new one. The Azar grammar book: I prefer that you have 4th edition, but 3rd edition is OK.
Homework for Thursday, Jan 6

Do the editing practice I handed out in class.

Please bring your Academic Connections book if you have it. We’ll start the unit on architecture.
Do you have any postcards or pictures of famous buildings in your country? Please bring them!
Homework for Friday

Do page 76 in Academic Connections. Read the original, then read the three summaries and
finish the chart below.

Write about a famous building in your country/city. Try to do a little research, but DO NOT copy
from the internet!!!!! This is free writing, not organized. 3/4s to one page double spaced hand
written is fine.

We have to choose a book to read! Look at my book list under Resources of my website. See if
anything is interesting to you. I’ll bring a lot of books tomorrow and we can go to the library.
Homework for Monday January 10th
 Read the first 15-20 pages of your book. Fill out the yellow summary page.
JUST summarize the first 15-20 pages about the character and setting. Do
not copy the book jacket! Practice your summarizing skills. (yellow page is
on my website in Resources)
 Academic Connections pp. 77-79: This is a listening, but try to match the
descriptions A-F with the pictures.
Homework for Tuesday, Jan 11
 In Academic Connections read pp. 88-89 about different concepts in
aesthetics, like ‘The golden ratio,” “the rule of thirds” and ornamental
vs. simple. I like to give ‘pop quizzes’ so read it carefully.
 Do Academic Connections Vocabulary p. 91
 Do Exercise 2 of the noun clauses handout (“hit and run”)
Homework for Wed Jan 12
 Blue Azar 4th edition: Do Ex 6 and 9, pp. 244/246 (in the old 3rd
edition it’s pp. 241 and 243)
 Continue to read your book. A new book report will be due on
Monday. You should be finished with your book by mid-quarter
Week 5.

 We have a quiz on the words on the crossword puzzle.

We’ll have an ‘embedded questions’ quiz. MAINLY review the grammar handout I
gave you on Friday “Noun clauses as included questions” BUT you can also look at
Azar Chapter 12, Boxes 12-2 and 12-3. The quiz will have ten multiple choice. Here
is an example:

 In your grammar book, read p. 261 Chart 12-7. (3rd edition is on p. 254)
 Read the article on career paths I gave you (email me if you were absent
and would like it) Make key notes in the margin. Answer the questions.
Make a list of key points at the end. You will write a summary about it in
class tomorrow.
 We are in the computer lab all day tomorrow. See you in 3305 at 9 am
Homework for Tuesday, January 25
 Finish the grammar handout on reported speech, pp. 394-397
 Write your 8 sentences comparing and contrasting your classmate. If you
were absent, email me, and I will send it to you by attachment.
 If you have not yet done your summary or book report, please do them!
Homework for Wednesday January 26
We discussed and brainstormed Accounting and teaching and the
differences and similarities. I uploaded a document in “Resources” titled
“HW for Jan 26” CHOOSE to write the other point-by-point (topic) or the
other block paragraph. I have one of each as a model.
Homework for Monday January 31 (immediately available just for
Hassan!)
 Book report is due
 Interview one other person, (preferably from a country OTHER than
your own, but someone from your country is OK) and fill out the 2nd
column. Take lots of notes! You’ll write an essay about this!
 Do a “Venn Diagram” of the transportation systems of the two
people you talked to.
 We will begin an outline on Monday.
OPTIONAL:
 We listened to the lecture in our textbook very quickly. If you want to
read the transcript, it is on p. 184-185 of Academic Connections.
 If you have access to academicconnectionsonline, it’s good to
practice some Unit 5 vocabulary
Homework for Tuesday February 1
 (You have hopefully completed two full interviews by now!)
 Your outline – either the first half (point by point) or the second half (block)
of the handout I gave you in class (email me if you were absent and want
this! You can add a third similarity or difference, but be organized!
 Subject/Verb agreement handout.
 Re-read Sonia’s essay on shopping in Cambodia and Russia
 Your two body paragraphs will be due on Wednesday.
Homework for Thursday Feb 3rd
 We will meet in the computer lab tomorrow, Rm 3305
 I will return your two paragraphs, and you can use computer lab time to
work on all four paragraphs: Intro, body 1, body 2 and conclusion.
 Do vocabulary on p. 108 of Academic connections.
 Do Exercise 9 and 10 of the handout on count/non count nouns.
Homework for Monday, Feb 14 (happy valentine day!)
 Read the model essay carefully and fill out the analysis paper completely.
 Think of a couple of issues (in your country, the world or the US) and
brainstorm the pros and cons. These are two possible topics you will write
about and talk about in class. Choose something you feel passionate about!
DO NOT look on the Internet! It is too tempting to read an essay that
already exists!
 Book Report #6 is due.
Homework for Tuesday February 15
 Come to class with a CLEAR thesis: Choose ONE issue, one side of the issue
you would like to write about.
 Complete the “2nd” Unreal/hypothetical/imaginary Present Conditional HW
that I gave you.
Homework for February 16
 Do the past imaginary conditional worksheet I gave you.
 Finish your Catalogue skimming and scanning activity.
 Continue to ‘flesh out’ your mindmap of your argumentative thesis. Come
with that mind map completed and we’ll turn it into a workable outline!
 Think of another, new and original way to tell Amy she is fat! 
Homework for February 18
1. Go to back to my Resource page. Visit my grammar websites. I added some
‘3rd/past unreal” grammar websites to my grammar list. Practice!
2. Come to class with any interesting information you found on your topic on
the website…just for an informal sharing
3. Your THREE body paragraphs are due on Tuesday, typed and double
spaced. If you give it to me Wednesday or later, it will be a 50% reduction
of points.
4. NO CLASSES MONDAY (but see you Friday)

answer the vocabulary/comprehension questions on p. 145. (Pay attention
to tenses as you read, but mostly just enjoy the reading.

PRESENTATION ASSIGNMENT
Based on my model presentations on “Webbed toes” and “remedial teacher,”
create a 6-8 Powerpoint slide presentation for MONDAY. Your choices are:
1. Choose a genetic disorder (ask Amy for an idea) Your slides should include
Introduction, Definition of disorder, examples, types, and/or manifestations,
genetic mutation (dominant or recessive? Missing genes?) and prevention
and/or treatment
OR
2. Choose an occupation. Go to Occupational Outlook Handbook
http://www.bls.gov/OCO/ Choose an occupation in which you are
interested. Your slides should include: Nature of work (duties), Training and
Qualifications, Employment opportunities and job outlook, earnings/salary,
and other types of jobs.
I am flexible on the slides you have. My ideas are only to guide you.
