POETRY ASSIGNMENTS FOR WEEK 8.
No annotation this week in honor of Memorial Day: a great opportunity to focus on
your creative work.
Responses to creative work: Responses to last week’s material due: Wed, May 25.
Creative Writing: Read pages 151-170 in Poet’s Companion. Get to know the forms of
blues, villanelle, pantoum, and sestina. These forms are especially suited to telling a
story, or exploring a complex situation. They can be serious, humorous, or a mixture of
both.
Your task is to write four (4!) poems using one or more of these formal strategies, in any
combination you like. For example, you could do 4 sestinas, or 2 blues and 2 villanelles,
or one each of all four forms, etc. Submit by Tuesday, May 31.
Share: Choose two or more of your formal poems and submit them to your new group
for discussion for next week. Provide a short note on how you liked writing these.
