Recording with Audacity Today you will learn how to record your speaking. 1. Do you have a NetID? If you do, get a headset from me. If you do not have a net ID, ask me and I will help you get one. 2. Sit at a computer and sign on with your NetID. 3. Follow these instructions. Start Programs Multimedia Applications Audacity Language: English OK Plug in your headset and put it on 4. Test your microphone: Click on the round, red “Record” button Now, say a few words. If the levels go up and down in the screen, your microphone works. Click on the square, yellow “Stop” button. Click on the green arrow “Play” button to listen to your words. If you can’t hear yourself #1: make sure the speaker on your computer is on. If you can’t hear yourself #2: If the levels don’t move, or if the line is a flat line (or almost flat) and you can’t hear yourself, check the mute switch on your headphones and try again. If it doesn’t work, call me. 5. To begin recording again, close Audacity and open again (steps 1-3). Now you are ready to record. For practice, tell me what you did last night. 2-3 sentences is fine. Please begin all recordings with: Hi, Christina. This is (your name) about/read you (the assignment) , and I am going to talk to you . 5. Record your voice. When you finish, please say something like “That’s all”, or “Thank you”, or “Goodbye”. 6. Listen to your voice. If you don’t like the recording and want to try again, CLOSE AUDACITY and then open it again. Begin a new file. DO NOT RE-RECORD IN THE SAME FILE. IT WILL NOT WORK. 7. Now you are ready to save your recording. PLEASE follow these steps exactly, or you will lose your recording! DO NOT USE “SAVE AS” PLEASE FOLLOW THESE STEPS EXACTLY! Click on File export as ogg vorbis Save your file as: your name Last Night (For example: Cathylastnight.ogg) Save on the desktop 8. Next, go to the Internet. open your email account. Please attach your file to an email. Put your name and the assignment in the Subject line Send the email to this email address: cpurdy74@gmail.com (! Do not use this email address for any other communication to me; use it only to send large audio files.) 9. After you send your recording, ask me (in class) to check my email to see that I’ve received your recording. 10. After you finish this assignment, and I have received it and I know it’s correct, you can ask me for the next assignment.
