ready for class?

3.6+ (very active) = You actively participate and your contributions have been valuable to the
quality of the seminar; you have played a leadership role in seminar by encouraging others to
participate, by modeling effective “mining” of the texts, and by being an engaged listener.
3.0+ (somewhat active) = You have been a regular contributor and often supported others by
providing insights into the texts, actively listening, and stimulating other’s responses.
2.0+ (occasionally active) = You have provided some points about themes in the texts and
helped to find passages in the texts, as well as being an engaged listener.
1.0 = You have almost never spoken and sometimes have come unprepared.

C. Critical Thinking/Communicating
What evidence can you cite about your critical thinking and communicating skills to show greater
evidence of understanding and skill development? For example, in critical thinking, you might cite
the comments on your seminar papers from Margot that reflect a clearer understanding of P.I.E.
(which fosters critical thinking), or you might cite an ability to read a text from the perspective of our
course theme of leadership skills and therefore be more able to contribute to the discussions in

seminars, or you might cite research that you have done outside of class to deepen your own
understanding of a particular theme or issue.
In reference to your communicating skills, you could reference a specific incident where you used a
particular multicultural communication skill (including but not limited to active or deep listening
skills, LaRay Barna’s article on “Stumbling Blocks to Intercultural Communication”, Nieto’s antioppression skills, cultural cues (including both verbal and non-verbal cues, the use of empathy, etc)
to demonstrate a deepening ability to foster understanding and improve relationships.
D. Critical Reflection. As you think about the different concepts and ideas in our class and their
relevancy to our multicultural country and interconnected world, what new learning have you gained?
How has the reading of our texts, the seminars in your small groups, the different learning activities such
as your work on the two cultural interviews, and the discussions/lectures we’ve had in our class
contributed to a deeper understanding of your own self as a learner and leader and your understanding of
the world around you? Give specific and concrete examples in this paragraph of how you have grown or
put together some of these ideas and their impact on your life.

performed at a very good level in all aspects of the course; completed all the work
and made a strong effort; effective contributor to the learning community.

Adequate/OK (2.0 range) Completed all the work in a competent manner; reading,
writing, and/or communication skills need further improvement; inconsistent in
contributing to the learning community.

Below average (1.0 range) Didn’t complete some of the work; had a number of
unexcused absences and/or quality of work needs improvement to reflect minimum
college-level standards.
