Course Materials for Cisco 3
The online curriculum will be considered definitive; however, if you prefer reading a hardcover book to
reading curriculum online, buy the “LAN Switching and Wireless Companion Guide” and the “Accessing
the WAN Companion Guide.” Please follow all online instructions supplied with the Packet Tracer labs
and do not use the hardcopy “Labs and Study Guide” for instructions on how to do the Packet Tracer lab
simulations unless instructed otherwise in the lab handouts. The live equipment labs described in the
book can differ by as much as 20% from the instructions supplied in the Packet Tracer Simulations. Lab
Guides are required for grading purposes.
4 Required Books: CCNA 3 & 4 (CNA Program),

The following books are entirely optional and not available at the NSCC Bookstore. The books are
listed in the order of importance (my opinion) so I would buy the Portable Command Guide first.

Course Requirements and Grading
1.
Chapter/Module exams for Cisco 3 (including Cisco 4) are 30% of your grade. There are 7
quizzes in switching and 8 quizzes in WAN all worth 2 points each for a total of 30 points possible.
The 7 quizzes for Switching must be completed by midnight May 6th, 2013 or you will earn 0 points
for each incomplete quiz in the first section of the class. All Switching quizzes will be disabled at
midnight on May 6th, 2013. The 8 quizzes for the WAN part of the class must be completed by
midnight June 10th, 2013 or you will earn 0 points for each incomplete quiz in the second section of
the class. All 8 quizzes for the WAN section of the class will be disabled at midnight on June 10th,
2013. Time will not be allotted in class for chapter/module exams. This is part of your homework
and the exams will be available online 24/7. Only three attempts at Chapter/Module quizzes are
allowed.
2.
Lab Completion for Cisco 3 is 32% of your grade. There are 17 labs in Switching and 15
labs in the WAN section so each required lab is worth 1 point...32 points possible. Extra credit can
be earned by doing optional labs. Optional labs are worth ¼ point each and a maximum of 10
points can be earned through extra credit labs. If all required labs are completed in both Cisco 3
and Cisco 4, then optional labs become worth ½ point each but a maximum of 10 points is still the
most points one can gain from extra credit for both Cisco 3 and 4 combined. All labs for Cisco 3,
Switching, must be completed by Monday, 5/6/2013. Switching labs submitted after midnight
5/6/2013 will be reduced in value by 50%. All labs for Cisco 4, WAN, must be completed by the last
day of class Monday, 6/10/2013. All WAN labs submitted after midnight June 10, 2013 will be
reduced in value by 50%. No labs will be accepted after midnight June 12th, 2013.

for any student who wants to complete the online midterm in class. You must complete the online
midterm by 8:30 PM if you choose to complete it in the classroom. If you cannot complete the

get a zero for the test. I will be in the classroom on June 12th at 6 PM so that students can take the

9.
Attendance: Because of the pace and difficulty of this course, 100% attendance is
MANDITORY! If you are here then I know you are doing the in class labs.
For CCNA vouchers, students must complete all four courses of the CCNA Exploration curriculum
and receive a score of 75 percent or higher on their first attempt of the final exam for the final
CCNA Exploration course; Accessing the WAN at the end of the Cisco 3 class. According to Cisco,
the test voucher equals 50% of the cost of the Cisco tests and can only be applied to one test either
the CCNA itself or ICND1 or ICND2.
Cost of taking Official Cisco certification tests are not paid for by NSCC.
Course Feedback – Required each quarter for all students--Located with assessments at end of each
quarter. You won’t be able to sign up for more advanced Cisco Network Academy classes at any
institution anywhere if you forget to do the course feedback because I won’t be able to graduate you in
the Cisco Network Academy database system. CCNA Security and CCNP are more advanced classes.
Online Assessments – Required—One per module/chapter – Activated 24/7 by instructor. These exams
give you a weekly indication of how you are progressing. Each exam can be taken a maximum of 3 times.
110 hours of study or lab time outside of class hours should be expected
Instructor availability:
The instructor will not be available by email or any other means between the last day of any
quarter and the first day of the next quarter. All coursework must be completed by midnight of
Wednesday, June 12th, 2013. During the Cisco 3 class, the instructor will be available by email from
Monday through Wednesday. You can still send completed labs 7 days a week 24/7.
Late Work:
Any work received after the due date or time will be considered late. Late work will be subject to a
discount at the rate of 50%. You will not be able to resubmit your assignments with corrections. No
work will be accepted after June 12th, 2013.
CHEATING:
Cheating is a serious offense and may result in a failing grade. ANY use of work of another with the
intent to submit it as your own is considered cheating. If two assignments or tests look inappropriately
similar, both assignments or tests from both students will receive no credit (0 points). If you work with
someone else on non-group homework or assignments, you must each complete your own work in its
entirety; simply altering a name on an individual assignment and submitting it as one’s own is considered
cheating. Any student caught cheating may receive a grade no higher than a 2.0 for the entire class.
If you are not sure, ask me first.
STRATEGIES FOR SUCCESS:
Read the assigned online/text book sections before you come to class. Read the instructions on the
Assignment sheet as well as the information in the text before completing the hands-on assignments. Do
not rely on learning the software features simply by completing the hands-on exercises. Complete work
for your class on a regular basis. You will need from five to twenty hours each week outside of class
time on the routers, switches, PCs and/or Packet Tracer labs and to complete the reading assignments.
Contact me if you have questions about an Assignment. It is your responsibility to do this. If you do
not ask questions, I will not be able to provide you with the help you may need. Do not wait until the
weekend before the Assignment is due to ask your questions; I usually do not check e-mail on the
weekends.
General Course Recommendations and Requirements
Please turn off all electronic devices during class times. If it is absolutely necessary to leave a device on,
please make certain it is in silent mode.
Make sure you work diligently on all labs throughout the course. Lab exercises are essential for
comprehension.
Please ask questions as they relate to the current subject matter. Do not wait until the end of the course or
class.
Accommodation
If you require accommodations based on a documented disability, have emergency medical information to
share, or need assistance in case of emergency evacuation; please contact me as soon as possible.
If you would like to inquire about becoming a DSS (Disability Support Services) student please call Terri
Dobrich - (206) 526-7808 go in person to the DSS office in CC 2346A (College Center, 2nd floor north

"The Americans with Disabilities Act is designed to ensure that students with disabilities have an equal
opportunity to access academic programs and successfully complete their studies. Any student with
special needs must bring documentation to the Disability Support Services office on the campus before
any academic adjustments will be made. Any contacts and/or information will remain strictly
confidential."
SCHEDULE CHANGES DUE TO WEATHER OR OTHER EVENTS:
Please sign up for the NSCC Emergency campus alert notification system at the following web
site: http://www.northseattle.edu/services/emergency-notifier.htm. You can also monitor local
media for information regarding school closures. If a class is cancelled, students should follow the
course schedule and be prepared for the next scheduled class. It is your responsibility to listen for such
announcements. If the College should be closed for more than 5 days, I will determine which, if any,
Assignments may be omitted. Check with me for any additional information. Please note that if the
campus is closed, I will not be available.
