Course Materials for Cisco 1
The online curriculum will be considered definitive; however, if you prefer reading a hardcover book to
reading curriculum online, buy the “Network Fundamentals Companion Guide.” Please follow all online
instructions supplied with the Packet Tracer labs and do not use the hardcopy “Labs and Study Guide” for
instructions on how to do the Packet Tracer lab simulations unless instructed otherwise in the lab
handouts. The live equipment labs described in the book can differ by as much as 20% from the
instructions supplied in the Packet Tracer Simulations. Lab guide is still required for grading purposes.

Course Requirements and Grading—a score of 96 points or higher is a 4.0 grade for the class, there
are a total of 103 points possible.
1.
The online final exam for Cisco 1 is worth up to 25 points with a perfect score. The online
final exam must be completed by the end of the last day of class at 11:55 PM Wednesday, 6/12/2013.
The maximum time allowed for the online final exam is 3 hours. Once you start the final exam you
must complete it within three hours. If you log out of the test after you have started it without
completing any questions you will get a zero for the test. The final exam is open book and open
Internet and you do not have to be in the classroom to take the final exam. You will only be able to
take the final exam 1 time. The Final exam will be available online from Saturday June 8th, 2013
until Wednesday June 12th, 2013. The online final exam will be enabled at 8 AM and be available
until midnight each day. You will not be able to take the online final exam between the hours of
midnight and 8 AM. I will be in the classroom on Monday June 10th and Wednesday June 12that 3
PM so that students can take the online final exam in the classroom if they choose. You must
complete the final exam by 5:30 PM if you choose to take the online final exam in the classroom and
you will not be able to interact with other students in the classroom while taking the exam. If you
cannot complete the online final exam for any reason remotely and you choose not to show up on
Monday June 10th, or Wednesday June 12th, 2013 to complete the final exam in the classroom you
will receive no points for the final exam.
2.
Chapter/Module exams/quizzes/assessments for Cisco 1 are worth up to 20 points of your
grade. Time will not be allotted in class for chapter/module exams. This is part of your homework
and the exams will be available online 24/7 all quarter long. All Chapter/Module exams must be
completed by Midnight of 6/10/2013. You will be able to take the chapter/module
exams/quizzes/assessments a maximum of three times. Only the score for the last completed quiz
will be kept, not the highest score of the three attempts.
3.
Labs are worth 1 point each and the maximum point value for all completed labs is 33
points because there are a total of 33 labs.
4.
The hands on lab final exam for Cisco 1 is worth up to 25 points if you attend all 5 sessions.
Attendance is Mandatory for all 5 days including the cable making lab which is part of the hands
on final exam and should take one day. Attendance is also mandatory for the router configuration
part of the exam which will happen during the last three weeks of the class and should take 4 class
days to complete. Each day of attendance for the hands on final exam is worth 5 points and you
must stay in the classroom for the entire class length of 2.5 hours to get the full 5 points per day.
5.
The online final exam must be completed by the last day of class which is Wednesday, June
12th, 2013. All other work must be completed by midnight on Monday, June 10, 2013 for full credit.
Any work other than the online final exam submitted after the midnight deadline of Monday June
10th, 2013 will be reduced in point value by 50%.
6.
If you can’t complete all your work this quarter, plan on a poor grade or a No Credit at my
discretion…do not plan on an Incomplete.
7.
Attendance: Because of the pace and difficulty of this course, 100% attendance is
MANDITORY! If you are here then I know you are doing the labs. If you are not here your Lab
grade will suffer the consequences unless you can prove you are doing the labs in some other way.
Final Exam–Required –Only one attempt allowed. A score of 75% or better earns a certificate of
completion from Cisco and a letter of recognition from Cisco.
For CCNA vouchers, students must complete all four courses of the CCNA Exploration curriculum and
receive a score of 75 percent or higher on their first attempt of the final exam for the final CCNA
Exploration course; Accessing the WAN at the end of the Cisco 3 class. The test voucher traditionally
equals 50% of the cost of the Cisco tests. Cisco won’t specifically say how much of a discount is
available so it may only be less, but in the past it has been 50%.
The cost of taking the Official Cisco certification tests are not paid for by NSCC.
Course Feedback – Required each quarter for all students--Located with the chapter assessments and
enabled at the end of each quarter.
Online Chapter Assessments – Required—One per module/chapter – Activated 24/7 by instructor.
These exams give you a weekly indication of how you are progressing. Each exam can be taken a
maximum of 3 times.
All Cisco 1 Exams and Course Feedback forms must be completed online before you can be
enrolled in the Cisco 2 class.
165 hours of study or lab time outside of class hours should be expected
Policies and Procedures:
Students must have access to the Internet, and a functioning E-mail account!! Accounts are available to
all registered students at NSCC.
CHEATING:
Cheating is a serious offense and may result in a failing grade. ANY use of work of another with the
intent to submit it as your own is considered cheating. If two assignments or tests look inappropriately
similar, both assignments or tests from both students will receive no credit (0 points). If you work with
someone else on non-group homework or assignments, you must each complete your own work in its
entirety; simply altering a name on an individual assignment and submitting it as one’s own is considered
cheating. Any student caught cheating may receive a grade no higher than a 2.0 for the entire class.
If you are not sure, ask me first.
STRATEGIES FOR SUCCESS:
Read the assigned online/text book sections before you come to class. Read the instructions on the
Assignment sheet as well as the information in the text before completing the hands-on assignments. Do
not rely on learning the software features simply by completing the hands-on exercises. Complete work
for your class on a regular basis. You will need from ten to forty hours each week outside of class time
on the routers, switches, PCs and/or Packet Tracer labs and to complete the reading assignments.
Contact me if you have questions about an Assignment. It is your responsibility to do this. If you do
not ask questions, I will not be able to provide you with the help you may need. Do not wait until the
weekend before the Assignment is due to ask your questions; I usually do not check e-mail on the
weekends.
General Course Recommendations and Requirements
Please turn off all electronic devices during class times. If it is absolutely necessary to leave a device on,
please make certain it is in silent mode.
Make sure you work diligently on all labs throughout the course. Lab exercises are essential for
comprehension.
Please ask questions as they relate to the current subject matter. Do not wait until the end of the course or
class.
Accommodation
If you require accommodations based on a documented disability, have emergency medical information to
share, or need assistance in case of emergency evacuation; please contact me as soon as possible.

"The Americans with Disabilities Act is designed to ensure that students with disabilities have an equal
opportunity to access academic programs and successfully complete their studies. Any student with
special needs must bring documentation to the Disability Support Services office on the campus before
any academic adjustments will be made. Any contacts and/or information will remain strictly
confidential."
SCHEDULE CHANGES DUE TO WEATHER OR OTHER EVENTS:
Please sign up for the NSCC Emergency campus alert notification system at the following web
site: http://www.northseattle.edu/services/emergency-notifier.htm. You can also monitor local
media for information regarding school closures. If a class is cancelled, students should follow the
course schedule and be prepared for the next scheduled class. It is your responsibility to listen for such
announcements. If the College should be closed for more than 5 days, I will determine which, if any,
Assignments may be omitted. Check with me for any additional information. Please note that if the
campus is closed, I will not be available.
