you have any questions about the course, home work problems or the exams please
address an email to us via the CANVAS email system. Do not post your questions for us in

Course Description:
ACCT261DL is designed to prepare students to effectively use accounting information
systems. The course allows students to participate in the design of an Accounting
Information System and in so doing helps develop and understanding of how they work.
The course also looks at various fraud and fraud prevention associated with AIS, how IT
affects processes and controls and the effects of recent regulatory developments on the
design and operation of accounting systems.
Course Objectives:
Attributes that are highly valued in the workplace are: the willingness and ability to learn,
discipline, integrity, self-motivation, adaptability, commitment, communication, teamwork,
timeliness and dependability. I am delighted to report that the design of this course allows
you to develop and enhance these skills.
Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:
1. Use quantitative reasoning processes to understand, analyze the goals, objectives and
methods for auditing information systems.
2. Identify and apply the AICPA’s Trust Service framework for ensuring systems reliability of
proprietary information, maintain privacy of personal-identity information and provide for
information integrity.
3. Apply internal controls objectives and the effects of IT on those objectives, as well as the
specific controls used to achieve those objectives.
4. Interact effectively with individuals and groups in an online environment.
5. Access, evaluate, and utilize financial information from a variety of sources and a variety
of contexts.

FALL QUARTER 2013
Class Format: This is a fully online course and includes individual problem solving,
spreadsheet exercises, peer-to-peer information sharing and learning via participation in a
discussion room, four examinations all completed online, homework and a capstone project.
If you need special arrangements in order to successfully take this course please contact us
immediately.
Time Commitment: You are expected to need about the same amount of time each week
in this online class as you would need to be successful in an on-campus class (without the
commute time, of course!) Please plan to devote a certain amount of time (5-10 hour)
during each week to completing your assignments and using the supplemental material
posted in the weekly folders. Do not wait until the night assignments are due to get started
- active participation in the discussion room throughout the week will enhance the course
for everyone. If you have questions or concerns, please email me and we will seek solutions.
Course Requirements: It is essential that you keep up with the course. Each week we will
cover a large quantity of material which is interrelated. If you fall behind with the assigned
readings, practice problems, and home work, it will be very difficult to catch up. The best
way to learn accounting concepts is by practice; as such, readings and problems will be
assigned and you are expected to do the readings and do the homework. These
assignments will be the basis for on line discussion, problem solving sessions and exams.
Discussion Board participation will be monitored in terms of quality, not quantity. You
might also be required to complete some assignments and projects as part of a team.
You must have access to a compatible computer and software capable of receiving
and opening course related documents and programs.
To be successful in this course you must set aside at least 10-15 hours of study time
every week.
Student Evaluation:
On line contributions, participation and overall demonstrated individual improvement in ones
understanding and use of an AIS throughout the quarter will be monitored and considered in
assigning the final grade

resolution. Please refrain at all cost from discussing personal issues, including grades on the

EXAMS:
For examination purposes you are responsible for all materials assigned in this
schedule even though we may not cover all the materials or have assignments
reinforcing concepts in the book. Ask questions and seek clarifications in advance of
exams if materials and concepts are not clear.
However, you can expect that about 85-90% of exams will reflect materials covered
via homework and assignments. The other 10-15% of the exams might come from
your reading of the textbook, referenced articles & readings suggested throughout
the course and your expected general understanding of accounting.
The Mid-term and Final exams are available in CANVAS. They are timed exams which
mean that when you log on to take the exam you have a set time to finish the exam.
When made available, please read information related to the exams carefully and
follow the instructions.
You can not reschedule to take these exams so plan your time accordingly.
Ask for help early and do not fall behind as it is very hard to catch up!
