Writing Exercise #2
This writing exercise has three parts. Use this form to complete all parts and then submit
it using the drop box in the Week 2 Module.
Part 1: Choose a short passage (1-3 sentences) from the Beginnings section of Marilyn
Butler’s Introduction to Frankenstein that you think applies in some way to your
understanding of the book. Step into and out of the quotation. The goal here is to
reflect on elements of Mary Shelley’s biography and how they may find resonance in her
text.
Part 2: After reading the section of Butler’s Introduction entitled The Shelley’s and
Radical Science, explain as best you can the various influences William Lawrence had on
the novel, according to Butler.
Part 3: Choose a short passage (1-3 sentences) from The Novel, 1: Walton and the
Creature and explain how it augments your understanding of the novel. Then do the
same thing with The Novel, 2: Parenting and Breeding.
