ENGL&102 – English Composition II (Online & Hybrid)
Seminar Paper #2: Explicating Connections
Seminar Paper #2 has three parts. Separate your response into those three parts. Write in
complete sentences and in paragraph form.

Part 1 Find a Thread: Identify a thread, binary, or binary opposition in Denis Johnson’s
collection Jesus’ Son. Look for accrual throughout multiple stories rather than singular
instances in individual stories. Explicate the connecting logic of the thread, etc. Make
sure to provide the names of the stories that figure in your analysis.

Part 2: Quote. Step into a short (1-2 sentences) quote from "A Conversation on Ralph
Steadman and His Book, America, with Dr. Hunter S. Thompson" that seems related to
the thread, etc. that you located in Jesus’ Son. Step out of the quote by explicating how
it sheds light on, alters, or in any way influences your understanding of what you wrote
about in Part 1.

Part 3: Your Synthesis Proposal. Outline your ideas for the Synthesis Essay. Identify
which texts you are working with and the meaningful connection between them. Step
into and out of one quotation from each text that exhibits an aspect of the meaningful
connection. Explain as best you can at this point the direction that your Synthesis will
take from here and what you think or hope can be gained from pursuing this synthesis.
Requirements: 2-3 pages; MLA format; double-spaced; 12-pt font; 1-inch margins; thoughtful,
interesting title.
