CHAPTER #5 STUDY GUIDE QUESTIONS MICROBIAL METABOLISM: Be sure you can answer the following questions before taking the test. OBJECTIVES: Basic Chemical Reactions Underlying Metabolism: 1. Define metabolism and identify the ultimate goal of metabolism. 2. Compare and contarst anabolism and catabolism – give an example of each process. 3. Describe the structure of ATP and why it is important. Enzymes: 4. Explain the collision theory and how it relates to activation energy. 5. Identify the general role of enzymes. 6. Draw a table listing the components of enzymes – be sure to differentiate between a holoenzyme, an apoenzyme, a cofactor, and a coenzyme. 7. List the factors that influence enzymatic activity, briefly describe their influence. 8. Describe feedback inhibition. Energy Production: 9. Explain reduction and oxidation reactions – why are they usually “coupled” - explain. 10. Identify, then compare and contrast the three types of ATP production (ie explain the different mechanisms used to phosphorylate ADP). 11. Explain the overall function of metabolic pathways. Biochemical Tests and Bacterial Identification: 12. Briefly describe the general purpose of biochemical tests, describe two different biochemical tests and how they are used to identify bacteria in the lab (note, you need to understand this concept as you will be using Biochemical Tests to identify your unknown). Metabolic Diversity Among Organisms: 13. Categorize the various nutritional patterns among organisms according to carbon source and mechanisms of carbohydrate catabolism and ATP generation (note, you will need to define and differentiate between the following; photoautotrophs, photoheterotrophs, chemoautotrophs, and chemoheterotrophs.
