What happened?

• A solid chunk of sodium metal was dropped into room temperature water. It immediately caused steam to rise from the water, caused the indicator in the water to turn pink and floated around on the water. It eventually burst into flame and made an audible sizzling sound. Finally, the metal disappeared, leaving a basic (pink) solution that was warmer than room temperature.
