Ch 23 Learning Objectives
1. Under aerobic conditions, what is the “general overview” for the fate of acetylCoA? Where does each step take place?
2. What are the products of one round through the citric acid cycle for one acetylCoA? For one glucose (in other words… for two acetyl-CoA molecules)?
3. Describe the regulation of the citric acid cycle. What causes it to speed up or
slow down?
4. Describe how the electron transport chain works. Where do the electrons go?
What is the final electron acceptor?
5. What is chemiosmosis, and how is the proton gradient created? Where is the
concentration of protons the greatest in the mitochondrion? Explain how
formation o the proton gradient is linked to the synthesis of ATP.
6. What is oxidative phosphorylation, and which enzyme actually carries out this
reaction?
7. How many ATP do you get from oxidative phosphorylation? Therefore, when
one glucose is sent through glycolysis  citric acid cycle  electron transport
chain, what is the theoretical ATP yield?
8. What happens to glucose that is consumed in excess of what our cells need
for energy? And if our blood glucose concentrations are lower than what we can
readily supply with food, what process occurs?
