Learning Objectives
Chapter 15
This is not a list of problems from the end of the chapter, but a list of concepts to
be able to understand/explain. If you have a thorough understanding of the
objectives, you will do well in the class! We will practice using these concepts
during lecture time, and some will come up in lab. Please ask questions!
1. What is the relationship between photosynthesis and respiration?
2. Be able to distinguish between an aldose and a ketose, and be able to classify
based on the number of carbons (i.e. looking at a drawn structure, be able to
label it as an aldopentose, etc)
3. Distinguish between D and L isomers of open-chain monosaccharides
4. Convert between open chain and cyclic form. Make sure the hydroxyls are still
in the right position! Recognize and  anomers, understand mutarotation.
5. Be able to draw oxidation and reduction products of an open chain
monosaccharide.
6. What does it mean to be a reducing sugar?
7. Understand the naming system for glycosidic bonds in disaccharides.
8. Identify when a disaccharide is/is not a reducing sugar.
