In writing, you will learn to master sentence control and develop clear paragraphs. Textbook: You can find these in the North Seattle Community College (NSCC) bookstore in the IEP 031 section. Kieth S. Folse “Great Paragraphs” Great Writing 2 Betty S. Azar ”Fundamentals of English Grammar” (4th edition) Materials: 1. Regular size paper (8 ½” x 11”) for all your assignments. Do not use small size paper. 2. Pencil or pen and an eraser. 3. Three-ring binder to hold handouts and homework. 4. Textbooks! If you do not have your textbook(s), you will lose your participation points for the day. 1 Student Responsibilities ATTENDANCE: Come to class on time every day prepared and participate. You receive 10 points a day for participation points. You lose 5 of these points if you are late. You lose all of these points if you are absent. You lose all of these points if you do not have your textbook(s), you are making trouble in class, or you are caught texting, surfing the internet, or sleeping during class. CLASSMATES: Work well with your classmates and listen to them. QUESTIONS: Ask questions when you don’t understand. You can ask your teacher or your classmate. HOMEWORK/QUIZ/TEST: Do all of your homework and study for quizzes and tests. There are no make-up tests/quizzes (You cannot take a test after everyone has taken it). I will drop your lowest test score at the end of the quarter. ENGLISH: Speak English during class. CELL PHONE: Turn off the ringer on your cell phone. Don’t send text messages in class. INTERNET: Don’t text or surf the internet during class. TALKING: Don’t talk when the teacher or another classmate is speaking to the class. RESPECT: Show RESPECT to your teacher and your classmates. Going to the Loft: You can go to the Loft to get extra help. You can work with a tutor, or work on the computer language programs, or listen to books on CD. The Loft is on the second floor inside the Library. The loft has the Focus on Grammar program as well. If you get behind in lab or want to do extra credit, you can go to there. Smoking: Please be careful. You can smoke only where the signs tell you smoking is OK. Please look for the signs about smoking. Midterm grades: I will give you your grade-to-date at the middle of the quarter. If you are not passing at that time, please make an appointment to see me to discuss what you can do to pass the class. Final Grades: You must pass the grammar and writing finals to pass this class. Your grades will be available online about two weeks after the quarter ends. The breakdown of your grade for this class will be as follows: Grammar Tests and Quizzes In-class and out of class writing Attendance and Participation Homework 40% 30% 10% 20% You must get at least a C grade (75%) in Grammar and Writing, as well as a C grade in Reading and Vocabulary to pass to the next level!!
