SP 2.2
Mapping Arguments
For this next assignment, locate one reference to another “thinker” that
Susan Bordo employs to establish or support her argument—e.g. Simone de
Beauvoir/ Jean-Paul Sartre (192-193), John Berger (210-214, 229), or
Plato/Descartes (230-231). After you have selected your “thinker(s),”
explain to your readers how those ideas are important to Bordo for that
moment in her argument. What is the intended meaning of that section?
Look at the moments in the text that both proceed and follow that section to
inform your reader as to the “local” meaning of this idea or theory. Finally,
come to a conclusion as to how this section supports her entire argument—
the “global” meaning. Plainly, this assignment asks to explain how a “part”
of an argument relates to or supports the “whole.”
