Materials: Please bring a 3-ring binder notebook, lined paper, pencil, and eraser. Course Description: The purpose of this class is to help you to improve your writing skills by using a system to focus on the errors you are making in your writing, and to practice correcting those errors. There will be some paragraph and essay level writing, but sentence level correction and editing of common grammatical, punctuation, and spelling errors and the particular errors of the students in this class, will be the main focus of the class. How to do well in class: Come to class every time. Come on time and don’t leave early. Do your homework. Turn it in on time. Do it before class. You cannot do it in class. If you are sick or have an emergency, call & leave me a message or send me an e-mail message. If you miss a class, ask a classmate for the homework. If you need a worksheet, ask me for it during the next class. Be active in class and always speak English. Sit next to different classmates every week; sit next to people who don’t speak your language. Work together with others and help others. Respect your classmates. Ask questions if you don’t understand. Read as much as you can in English! Use the Loft tutor center on the 2nd floor of the NSCC Library. Have as much FUN as you can learning English and in class!! Assignments and Quizzes: You will do some of your writing in-class & some as take-home assignments or homework from the text. Both are important. Quizzes may be announced a few days before they are given, or you may also have a pop quiz which means the quiz is not announced. You can expect that we will have at least one quiz on each chapter we cover in the textbook. Quizzes must be taken on the day the teacher gives them. You cannot make up a quiz if you are absent. How to Format your writing papers: 1. All paragraphs and homework must be double-spaced on lined paper. The paper must have a margin line. 2. Write with the margin on your left. 3. When you hand in a revised paper, give me the old paper too. 4. You can use the Loft tutors to help with homework paragraphs, but you must have specific questions to ask them when you go there. 5. If you are able to write an assignment on computer instead of handwriting, please do so! Grades: I will give you % grades on your quizzes, tests and homework so you can see your progress. To continue in this class next quarter, you must: 1. Attend at least 75% of the time 2. Do at least 75% of the homework, & get a grade of at least 75% on it. 3. Take at least 75% of the quizzes & tests & get at least 75% on them. 4. Get a grade of at least 75% on your in-class writing. Your final grade will not show a percentage grade, but will show S, Y or NC: S = Satisfactory, pass to next level. Y = Working and progressing but need more time at this level NC = No pass. Grades too low or work insufficient to pass this class. What the grades on your papers mean: / = 80% or more or 4 – Excellent – 90%, / = 60-79% 3 - competent/ at level - 75-89% / = less than 60% 2 – making progress – 60-74%, 1- beginning – 0-59% Please talk with me if you have special problems or needs. For example, if you have trouble seeing the board or hearing, talk with me about sitting at the front of the class. There will be regular homework assignments. There is no late homework without previous permission. If you are absent unexpectedly, please call a ‘homework buddy’ for the homework assignment.
