COURSE REQUIREMENTS The following requirements are important not only for your success, but also for the success of the whole class, including your teacher and your classmates. Here is a good “DO!” and ‘DON’T!” list to remember: DO! DO! DO! DO! DO! DO! 1. COME TO EVERY CLASS. If you must miss class for any reason, contact the teacher and explain your absence. There are three ways to explain your absence: Tell teacher ahead of time. If you know you need to miss a class because of an appointment, please let the teacher know before the day you will miss. Call teacher. If you leave a phone message, you can practice speaking English. E-mail teacher. If you send an e-mail, you can practice writing in English. 2. Be on time. This class begins at 11:00. It interrupts the class when students arrive late. NOTE: If you have trouble getting to class on time (because your class before this one is on the other side of campus, etc.), please let the teacher know. 3. Be ready. Come prepared. Come awake! Complete all homework assignments before class, and be prepared to discuss them or hand them in when class begins. Always bring your textbook and relevant hand-out materials to class. 4. Find out what you have missed and what the homework assignments are if you have been absent. It is your responsibility to be prepared when you return to class. Please get the phone number of two students you can call if you are absent this quarter and need to know what assignments you have missed: ____________________________________________________________________________ Name Phone Number Name Phone Number 2 5. Follow this rule. Treat others in this class as you would like to be treated. Listen attentively to your classmates and be prepared to discuss things with them. Please raise your hand when you wish to speak. Be respectful. 6. Turn off your cell phone before class begins so that the class will not be disrupted. 7. Speak English only during class. Always do your own work. If you feel like using your native language during class, sit by people who do not speak it. You are in class to improve your English. Sit next to different people every week so that you can practice your English every day with someone new. 8. Ask questions. We will cover a lot of material this quarter. If you don’t understand something, please ask me during class or after class. If you don’t ask questions, I will think that you understand everything. I always welcome questions. They help me to know what to teach you. DON’T! DON’T! DON’T! DON’T! DON’T! 1. Talk in class while your teacher is teaching, or while your classmates are speaking. This is very, very impolite. It tells everyone you do not respect him or her. If you talk in class all the time, the teacher will ask you to leave. 2. Text in class. If you text in class again and again, the teacher will take your phone for the class period. 3. Sleep in class. If you sleep in class, the teacher will ask you to leave. GRADES Your grade for this class will be based on attendance, class participation and your being prepared, including homework; grades are also based on your scores on tests and class speaking and listening projects. A grade of 75% or above is passing. All of the HOMEWORK of the Spring Quarter = 1/3 of the final grade All of the TESTS of the Spring Quarter, together = ATTENDANCE during Spring Quarter = 1/3 of the final grade 1/3 of the final grade There will be writing to do on each test. 3 At the end of Spring Quarter, the teacher will give you a percentage (%) grade. o 100% - 90% = 4 = Excellent (pass to next class) o 89% - 75% = 3 = Good (pass to next class) o 74% - 60% = 2 = Need more study, better attendance (stay in 035) o 59% - 0% = 1 = Need much more study (stay in 035) NOTE: There are no “make-up” tests for speaking and listening assignments. If you miss one, it is an opportunity lost. If you have missed handing in a homework assignment, you can find out what you have missed from other students and turn in the assignment. I will also drop your lowest test/assignment score at the end of the quarter. Another NOTE: ESL classes may be repeated a maximum of three times for students who are actively working toward a passing grade. For NSCC, you will get one of these grades: S = Satisfactory. You passed the class. Your overall percentage is 75% or higher. Y = You worked, but your overall grade is less than 75%. You did not pass the class. NC = No credit. You did not do enough work, and you did not pass. HOMEWORK If you want your English to improve, prepare your homework every day. NEVER copy another person’s homework. NEVER do homework in class. NEVER give your homework to another student to copy. It is important that you complete ALL your homework assignments. If you are very busy, please plan your homework time carefully. There will be homework speaking assignments every day. I will always let you know the day your speaking assignment is due. My comments and grade for your completed speaking assignment homework will be in the BIG BLUE ALPHABET FOLDER. Keep all of your graded and completed speaking assignment homework in your 3-ring notebook. IF I CANNOT COME TO CLASS If I am sick, we will not have class. You will see a pink paper near the door to the classroom saying that my class is canceled. If this happens, please call my office the next morning to know if we have class that day.
