Its mission is to provide the students and the Wellness Center members with an enjoyable and positive intramural experience in an organized and competitive environment. While the game is often competitive, ensuring participant safety, providing a fun atmosphere and promoting sportsmanship amongst all involved in the intramurals programs are our primary concerns. Objectives • To encourage self-participation and transform spectators into active participants • To offer a variety of physical activities to meet present interest and future needs • To provide incentive to all students who desire recreational experiences on an equal basis with fellow participants • To provide an environment whereby social relations and attitudes can be developed and high standards of sportsmanship are encouraged Sportsmanship Sportsmanship is defined as fair play, respect for opponents and polite behavior by someone who is competing in a sport or other competition. Sportsmanship is the key component to enjoying the recreational experience and encouraging all participants to join regardless of skillset. Players are expected to display good sportsmanship toward NSCC staff, opponents and Intramural services at all times. A player may be declared ineligible to participate in Intramurals activity for inappropriate behavior toward NSCC staff, Intramural services or opponents. Intramural service staff members have the authority to stop any contest when players and/or spectators engage in misconduct (unruly or disorderly behavior). No warning by the NSCC staff or Intramural service staff is required. The NSCC staff member or Intramural services can declare a forfeit against one or both teams. Any or all members of the offending teams may be suspended from organized Intramural activities. (For a complete listing of rules and sportsmanship policies, please read our misconduct section of this handbook). Rules & Regulations There will be rules for the particular sport that you participate online for you to view and printout. Also the coordinator will go over the rules of the sport at the first day of intramural event. Any male or female student currently enrolled in the North Seattle Community College or member of the Wellness Center (Staff & Community) is eligible to participate. Non – summer school students must pay a summer membership fee in order to be eligible to play in any summer intramural programs. Students participating in intramural activities must carry their current student I.D. cards with them for proof of eligibility, equipment check – out, and to enter the complex. All players that appear on a team’s roster must be a current student must be a current student or faculty member of NSCC. In addition, players cannot be added after the first game has been played without consent from the Athletic Director and or Program Coordinator. Any team that violates the participation rule will forfeit all games prior and be ineligible for the playoff competition. A valid ID CARD for all participants must be shown to the staff members before all games. All games must start on time. However, all teams will have a maximum of 10 minutes after the official start time. Any games beginning after the official start time may have to play in a speed-up rule format. Any team that does not show for scheduled game will be given a forfeit. Tournament play will end. In extreme circumstances, a game may be called during play. This is up to the Athletic Director and or Program Coordinator. Captains may provide feedback, but the final decision is made by the Athletic Director and or Program Coordinator. A game will be replayed if the first half is not completed. If called game during the second half, the team who is ahead at the time will be declared the winner. If called during half-time, the second half will be played at a later date. Each score and penalty situations, i.e. Sportsmanship will be carried over. All teams are encouraged to provide their own shirts with number. Each schedule will designate “Home” and “Visitor” teams. Shirt color of home and visitor will be activity into account. Injury & Liability Waivers Each Year, all individuals must have a signed liability waiver form in the office prior to any participation. Students who are age 17 or under must have a liability release form signed by their parents of legal guardian. Playing without proper liability waiver on file may result in forfeiture of game (s), loss of fee (s), and the individual’s removal from further participation. All participants are personally responsible for any medical approval necessary for their participation in a particular activity. The North Seattle Community College Wellness Center is not responsible for any payment and medical fees. Participants are personally responsible for medical approval for activities in which they participate. NSCC, its employees and others who are assisting with the conduct and administration of the programs assume no responsibility for any damages or personal injuries participants or spectators may receive. ALL participant and team captains MUST sign a liability waiver form before participating in any event. Proper attire should be worn while competing. All jewelry, watches, hats and any other personal items should be removed before participation. Individuals wearing casts should have them approved them by the Athletic Director and or Program Coordinator. Any person (s) bleeding and/or having blood on clothing will be removed from competition until this problem is resolved. Appropriate measures must be taken into account. Misconduct 1. Any player or coach verbally abusing or attempting to strike an opponent, teammate, official, supervisor or spectator shall automatically be suspended for a minimum of two games and possibly longer (at the discretion or of the Athletic Director and or the Program Coordinator). All Intramural program disciplinary action may be given in combination with North Seattle Community College disciplinary actions if the situation warrants. 2. Any player or coach striking or attempting to strike an opponent, teammate, official, supervisor or spectator shall automatically be suspended for a minimum of three games and possibly longer (at the discretion of the Program Coordinator) and will have NSCC Wellness Center privileges suspended for two weeks. All Intramural program disciplinary actions may be given in combination with North Seattle Community College disciplinary actions if the situation warrants. 3. Any player striking or attempting to strike an official or supervisor shall be automatically suspended for one year and will be suspended from the NSCC Wellness Center for at least three weeks and possibly longer at the discretion of the Athletic Director and or Program Coordinator. All Intramural program disciplinary action may be given in combination with North Seattle Community College disciplinary actions if the situation warrants. 4. If ejected form a game for misconduct, the player must sit out for the remainder of that contest and the team’s next scheduled contest at the discretion of the Program Coordinator. It is the responsibility of the ejected player to discuss his/her status with the Program Coordinator on the next working day following the contest. 5. All individuals are responsible for their own actions. A team’s action is the responsibility of the team captain. Failure to comply with the rules of the sport as well as eligibility and protest rules may result in future less of intramural privileges. 6. Repeated unsportsmanlike conduct, disregard for Intramural rules or excessively rough play will result in a forfeiture of the contest. The Athletic Director and or Program Coordinator responsible for making this decision and may do so without the officials’ recommendation. Equipment Abuse Most equipment will be provided based on the specific nature of the activity. Any person willfully causes destruction of, or damage to, equipment shall assume responsibility of the damage and will be assessed the full cost of repair or replacement. He or she may be suspended from all intramural participation for an indefinite period of time. Verbal Abuse Verbal abuse of officials and supervisors will not be tolerated. Penalty will be immediate suspension from the contest, and if further disciplinary action is warranted, the Athletic Director and or Program coordinator will render a decision based on the severity of the incident. PLEASE NOTE: The Athletic Director and or Program Coordinator reserves the right to put into immediate effect any new ruling regarding Intramural Sports and unsportsmanlike conduct. The Athletic Director and or Program Coordinator also reserves the right to adjust any rule or make additions as deemed necessary. Protests All protests must be made in writing to the Program Coordinator no later than 12 noon the next working day following the contest in question. When a protest situation arises during a contest, it is the responsibly of the team captain to notify the official/Program Coordinator immediately that the contest is under protest. The Program Coordinator will make a full report of the contest under protest. No further contests involving the teams under protest may be played until a decision is made. The Athletic Director and or Program Coordinator will review the situation. A Review of the protest situation will include: 1. Reading the written incident/protest report from the supervisor 2. Reading the written protest form the team captain 3. Calling the Athletic Director and or Program Coordinator/officials into a conference to discuss the incident 4. Making a decision based on the above information If the decision is to uphold the protest, the captains’ from both teams will be notified and given the basis of the decision. If the protest if denied, the team captain requesting the protest will be notified and told the reason for denial. Alcohol and Drug Policy Seattle Community College District VI recognizes that illicit drugs and alcohol abuse are major social problems which affect the health, safety, and security of individuals and organizations. Federal and State regulations also require a drug and alcohol abuse prevention program. As part of providing a healthful, safe and secure work and learning environment, each employee and student of Seattle Community College District VI is expected to be in appropriate mental and physical condition to perform assigned duties and fully participate in the learning process. It is the policy of Seattle Community College District to prohibit the unlawful manufacturing, distributing, possessing, or use of illicit drugs and abuse of alcohol. This policy applies to all employees and students of Seattle Community College District VI, while in or on any owned and/or controlled property of Seattle Community College District VI, or while conducting college business regardless of location. Violation of this policy by an employee will result in discipline up to and including termination of employment depending upon the seriousness of the violation. Disciplinary action will be processed in accordance with Federal and State regulations as well as union agreements. In addition to discipline, an employee who has violated this policy may be required to undergo rehabilitation for drug/alcohol abuse. Employees who need assistance in dealing with drug/alcohol abuse problems are encouraged to use the Washington State Employees Assistance Program and health insurance plans, as appropriate. Additionally, the District will establish a drug-free awareness program for employees. Students who violate this policy will be disciplined up to and including expulsion from the District depending upon the seriousness of the violation. Disciplinary action will be processed by the office of the Vice President of Student Services. Students may also lose federal funding and/or grants for their education. Students who need assistance in dealing with drug/alcohol abuse problems are encouraged to seek help through Student Services. Each campus will establish a drug-free awareness program for students. Nothing stated herein shall preclude Seattle Community College District VI from referring violators of this policy for prosecution as required by law. Employees required to have a Commercial Drivers License (CDL) are subject to pre-employment, post-accident, random and reasonable suspicion testing in accordance with appropriate federal and state statutes. Post-accident drug and alcohol testing may be conducted by Seattle Community College District for any employee when a work-related incident has occurred involving death, serious bodily injury or significant property/environmental damage, or the potential for death, serious bodily injury, or significant property/environmental damage, and when the employees action(s) or inaction(s) either contributed to the incident or cannot be completely discounted as a contributing factor (per SCCD/WFSE Agreement). Furthermore, employees and students are required to report any conviction under a criminal drug statute for violations occurring in or on properties controlled and/or owned by Seattle Community College District VI, or while conducting college business. Employees are to report such conviction to the Human Resources Department within five (5) days after said conviction. Students are to report such conviction to the Office of the Vice President of Student Services within five (5) days after the conviction. The Seattle Community College District shall determine whether or not the reported conviction of an individual is in any way a part of a federally funded or contracted program. Notification of conviction shall be made to an appropriate federal contracting agency within ten (10) days of having received notice that an employee engaging in the performance of such federally sponsored grant or contract has any conviction of drug violation occurring in the workplace. Alcoholic beverages and drugs are not permitted at any Intramural event. Contests will not be played and forfeited if alcohol or drugs are present. This policy includes spectators who are present at the contest. Participants who appear intoxicated due to alcohol or drug use will be permitted to participate in Intramural sports contests. Individuals and/or teams who arrive to a scheduled competition intoxicated, suspected of consumption, or possessing alcohol and/or illegal substances will not be permitted to play. The game will be immediately forfeited. There are no exceptions to this stipulation. The Athletic Director and or Program Coordinator will have the final decision. The Athletic Director and or Program Coordinator have the authority and responsibility to make decisions regarding students who are not permitted to participate.
