Read the essay once all the way through, paying special attention to clarity, and indicate any sentence
where the writer’s meaning is unclear.
Does the introduction draw you in as a reader? Why or why not? Does the introduction clearly indicate
the position the writer has taken? What is the thesis statement? Is it arguable, specific, and interesting,
while being of the proper scope? Why or why not?
Does the argument provide clear claims, grounds, and warrants? Does it make use of qualifiers and
address rebuttals? Does it appeal to audience values? Look for potential logical flaws and places that need
more evidence or explanation.
Take the opposing view and pose at least one counter-argument to your writer’s claims.
Style: Is there any MA (merely adequate) phrasing that could be improved? Are the MO (missed
opportunities) to dramatize the ideas further?
