Grammar Text: Betty Azar “Black Book” Fundamentals of English Grammar (CLEAN COPY!) There is no writing text. Optional: a dictionary, but it is not required. You should have these books by Wednesday, January 12th . Your book should not have any writing in it. After that, you will get a zero on your homework and lose participation points. OBJECTIVES FOR THIS COURSE Grammar Structure and Writing Review basic tenses (past, present, future) Present perfect and present perfect continuous Review and expand on modals (should/ supposed to, have to, must, don’t have to…) Infinitives (to + verb) and gerunds (verb + ing) Comparatives and superlatives Adjective clauses Reflexive pronouns (“I hurt myself”) Adverbial time clauses (after, before,…) Passive voice introduction Review and expand on paragraph skills Write a detailed paragraph about a familiar topic using simple, compound and complex sentences Use correct punctuation, such as a period or comma; use proper capital/lower case letters Apply appropriate grammar to a writing task Edit your and classmate’s writing to find mistakes Every day in every way: We will use social skills: working in pairs and groups productively and respectfully! Grading Assessment I will grade homework, tests, writings, classroom exercises and participation. I will use these marks in my grading book and on homework I collect and check. √+ (check plus) √ (check) √ - (check minus) X = 8 to 10 points = 6-7 points = not passing = did not do it (I will accept late homework up to two days late; after that, X) Your final grade will come from these tasks: Attendance,* participation, organization, being prepared and having a good attitude! 10% Homework (both quickcheck and collected) Weekly Grammar Quizzes In class and out of class paragraph writing and grammar writing homework; journals Mid term and final exam 25% 25%** 25% 15% If you must be absent, make sure you have a “buddy” in the class to call and find out the homework. **Quizzes and paragraphs done in class cannot be made up if you are absent, but I will drop a failing score. *You will fail this class if you are absent ten or more times. Two lates = one absence. No excused absences! You must pass 031 Grammar/Writng AND 032 Reading/Vocab with a 75% to advance to the next level. You will get one warning. The second time you will fail the class and go before the Dean. It is NOT tolerated in U.S. academic culture. You are the customer. I am the service provider.
