Catalog Description:
Goal 5: Students will demonstrate skill in using digital technology, such as computers
and the internet, to gather, analyze, and present information.
Proficiencies.
Courses designed to meet Core Goal 5 should lead students to proficiency in three or
more of the following four areas of computer use:
1. The presentation of information. How to use word processing and presentation
software. Proficiency may also include how to present information on the web.
2. The manipulation and interpretation of data. How to use spread-sheet software,
charting or graph-making programs, statistical software packages, and/or database
programs to extract information and draw conclusions from data.
3. The critical navigation of information spaces. How to use operating systems to store
and retrieve data, and how to find information on scholarly research databases and on
the Internet.
4. The communication of information. How to use e-mail, including attachments, to
communicate information to others. Proficiency may include blogging, instant
messaging, and posting to discussion boards.
Justification for inclusion in Core Goal 5:
Provide a brief explanation of how the course meets the four proficiencies. Attach a
course syllabus. If only sections of course address the goal, use a highlighter to identify
those sections (topics/activities/assignments) that address this goal. Complete the
