Guidelines for Staff News and Student News January 2016 Overview Staff News and Student News provide LSE internal audiences with news, events, need-toknow information and celebratory highlights. They are produced weekly in term time, and Staff News is produced each fortnight outside of term time. The Staff News and Student News newsletters are put together by Nicole Gallivan (Internal Communications Officer) and Sarah Guthrie (Head of Internal Communications). Format The newsletters use Newsweaver software which creates newsletters in a similar way to a web portal. There will be one main page with highlights and links to further information. The links will take the reader to a sub-page or to a webpage. This will allow us to focus the newsletter content and still maintain the broad range of news, events and updates which people require and want. Images are used to brighten up the newsletter and to develop an increased sense of community across LSE. Content News – from across the School Around LSE - this section is for School notices, promotions, awards, Academic Abroad etc Updates from regular news generators for each audience (ie Library, Careers, Estates etc) What’s On – public events and internal events LSE in Pictures – these will be taken from LSE’s Instagram and LSE Perspectives Training Surveys – short one question surveys will be included when we have content A regular update from DMT will be included. On each sub-page of the newsletter, staff and students will be able to make comments about news pieces and features. We will actively encourage discussion and contribution. Editorial policy News, events, features and images are welcomed from across the School. Copy should be submitted in draft to communications.internal@lse.ac.uk By each Monday for that week’s Wednesday edition of Student News By each Tuesday for that week’s Thursday edition of Staff News If you would like to submit images to be used alongside articles please send them in jpeg format. The Internal Communications team will edit content and reserves the right to refuse any submissions which don’t fit within these editorial guidelines. Copy will be short but informative and, where appropriate, will have a light tone. As far as possible, we will link to other LSE channels where further information is available and to encourage the sharing of content. What is not included in the newsletters: Sales and marketing from external organisations Adverts for flats to rent Lists of job vacancies at LSE News and updates for small groups of internal audiences. We will be able to advise of better communications routes to reach specific audiences. Monitoring The Newsweaver software will enable us to understand how LSE audiences read the newsletter and which types of information are most frequently clicked through to. We will also be able to see how people are reading the newsletters - for example, are staff reading it from their desktop and students from mobile devices as we expect? Following a term of the new newsletter format and content we will evaluate its reach and engagement and make recommendations for improvement. Anyone who submits an article for inclusion will be able to request an update on the number of people who have clicked through for further information. All requests should be made to communications.internal@lse.ac.uk
