Probability
Learning Objectives:
~ To discuss how likely events are to
happen.
~ To use mathematical vocabulary to
describe the probability of events
happening.
What is probability?


How likely is something going to
happen?
What are the chances of an event
happening?
Mathematical
Vocabulary

We use the following words to describe the
likelihood or chance of something happening:
 IMPOSSIBLE (It will never happen!!)
 UNLIKELY (It may happen but probably won’t)
 LIKELY (It may happen and probably will)
 CERTAIN (It will definitely happen)
How likely are these
events to happen?

You will go to a comprehensive school
in September.

You will drink something today.

You will see the Queen on your way
home.
Task:
You will be given some cards with
events on them.
 You have to sort the cards into 4
groups.
 The chances of the events happening
could be ‘impossible’, ‘unlikely’, ‘likely’
or ‘certain’.
 Work with your group to decide which
event is which!!
