Probability Learning Objectives: ~ To discuss how likely events are to happen. ~ To use mathematical vocabulary to describe the probability of events happening. What is probability? How likely is something going to happen? What are the chances of an event happening? Mathematical Vocabulary We use the following words to describe the likelihood or chance of something happening: IMPOSSIBLE (It will never happen!!) UNLIKELY (It may happen but probably won’t) LIKELY (It may happen and probably will) CERTAIN (It will definitely happen) How likely are these events to happen? You will go to a comprehensive school in September. You will drink something today. You will see the Queen on your way home. Task: You will be given some cards with events on them. You have to sort the cards into 4 groups. The chances of the events happening could be ‘impossible’, ‘unlikely’, ‘likely’ or ‘certain’. Work with your group to decide which event is which!!
