The Story of Zacchaeus The story of Zacchaeus tells us about a man who was disliked by most people, He was a tax collector who worked for the Romans and became rich by cheating people 1. 4. Zacchaeus is a really nasty, little man, Zac sat down for breakfast, a hard boiled egg, He loves to cheat folk, whenever he can, He chatted with his wife and scratched his head. Working for Rome he gathers money “That man Jesus, is in town today, He makes people cry – he ‘aint’ very funny. I might go and watch, as he passes my way.” 2 5 Collecting taxes, is what he does best, “He talks of love and setting men free He gives some to the Romans, and keeps the rest. It doesn’t sound like, the talk for me! It’s made him rich; he’s got lots in the bank, He sounds like a ‘crackpot’, out of his mind, For this it’s the poor, he has to thank. Giving up money and being really kind.” 3 6 Everyone hates, this little man Zac, Zac followed the crowd, but could not see. He’d better be careful, watch his back. He was really small, only five foot three. He’s really greedy; he takes more than he should, He pushed people and jumped up and down, Some people would kill him, if they could. Passers by gave him, a quizzical frown. 12/07/2016 D Barlow The Story of Zacchaeus 7 11 “I want to see Jesus, who sets men free,” They ate scrambled egg and drank red wine, He scrambled up a sycamore tree Everyone had a really great time. He got a good view he could see a long way Zac’s and his wife served up, a hot goat stew, Then suddenly Jesus was coming his way We’re really proud, this is our gift to you. 8 12 Jesus and his followers walked slowly by Ordinary folk asked, ” Why’s he eating with him? He waved at Jesus and caught his eye His really unpleasant he’s riddled with sin.” “Come down,” said Jesus, “and chat to me.” The man’s unclean; he should be cast out, Zacchaeus scurried out of his tree They got really angry and began to shout. 9 11 “Your leading a life, that’s not very good, Jesus calmed the crowd and began to speak, You don’t treat others, the way that you should. He ruffled his hair and got to his feet. Look after people, care for your fellow man, I’ve come for everyone, the whole human race, Help the human race, do what you can.” The holiness and goodness, shone from his face. 10 12 The words Jesus spoke, touched Zac’s heart, Zac changed his life and gave back to the poor, He’d change his ways – Have a new start. The sick and lonely, all passed through his door. “Come to my house and have some lunch, He gave his fortune, to the heal the sick, You can bring your friends, bring the whole bunch.” The words of Jesus, had done the trick. 12/07/2016 D Barlow
