University of Wisconsin Oshkosh
Honors & Awards Program Scenario
April 25, 2014
PROVOST EARNS (At Podium #1): Please be seated.
It is my pleasure to convene our 2014 Honors and Awards
Ceremony. My name is Lane Earns, and as Provost and Vice
Chancellor, I am pleased to welcome you to this special
occasion.
Nothing better symbolizes our University’s spirit than the
people we honor. The students recognized today have
excelled in scholarship and demonstrated their commitment
to the ideal of active learning. They have shown us the value
of living an examined life … one in which thought, insight,
Page 2 of 16
patience, and a sense of values are instruments to shape our
world.
When we recognize our students, we are reflecting and
respecting the value of the work by our faculty, instructional
staff, and other support personnel across the campus
community.
As we gather today, we are also grateful for the strong
relationships we have built with the greater Oshkosh
community and with our University’s alumni. Without these
connections, many of the scholarships provided today would
not be possible. Accordingly, we begin by thanking those
who made significant contributions. We thank our donors,
alumni, faculty, community members, and other
organizations who made today’s event possible.

PROVOST EARNS: Each student honored is enrolled in one
or more academic programs. Just as we celebrate the
accomplishments of these honored students, we also
recognize and thank the faculty and staff who have helped
deliver those programs of study. Building on this thought, it
is important that we properly recognize and thank the
leaders and academic deans who provide leadership,
direction and guidance within our graduate school, four
colleges, and through our division of lifelong learning and
community engagement.
In calling forward each dean – in turn – to speak on behalf
of their college, I also want to take pause to thank each of
them – individually – and all of them – collectively – for the
work they provide in academic affairs, which is, after all, the

central defining purpose and identity of UW Oshkosh as an
institution. Please welcome Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs
Petra Roter, Graduate Studies Dean Susan Cramer, College
of Business Dean William Tallon, College of Education and
Human Services Dean Frederick Yeo, College of Letters and
Science Dean John Koker, Lifelong Learning and Community
Engagement Assistant Vice Chancellor Karen Heikel, and
College of Nursing Dean Rosemary Smith.

PROVOST EARNS. I ‘m pleased to be here today
representing the staff, faculty and students in the Division of
Lifelong Learning and Community Engagement.
I would like to extend sincere congratulations to all of the
students and families who are receiving honors this

testament to the hard work, dedication and determination
you’ve exhibited during your time here at UW Oshkosh.

We believe that an education doesn’t start and end at
college. We are partners and advocates for our students,
some of whom I see in the audience today. Our goal is to
provide programs and resources for lifelong classroom and
community learning opportunities.
Again – Congratulations to each of you. On behalf of the

Students such as those who received the CHANCELLOR'S

who are being recognized this afternoon.
We will now proceed with the presentation of awards. Award

students. The contribution inspired by our award recipient’s
accomplishments will be an enduring legacy of their success
at UW Oshkosh. More information on the awards presented

CHANCELLOR MOVES TO PODIUM
CHANCELLOR WELLS (AT PODIUM #1): I want to
congratulate all of our award recipients today. Their
scholastic achievements and commitment to learning are
truly what makes the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh an
Page 15 of 16
outstanding institution. We know these achievements did not
happen without the support of a number of important people
who are here today. Will the family members of today’s
award recipients please stand to be recognized? (Applause)
Will the faculty and staff members who have supported
these students inside and outside of the classroom and
encourage academic excellence daily in the lives of our
students, please stand to be recognized? (Applause)
We would also like to take a moment to recognize our
donors. Without these kind, and giving individuals this
ceremony could not happen. Our donors understand the
extreme importance of being provided with the ability to
pursue a degree at a post-secondary institution. Will the
donors who are in attendance today please stand and be
recognized? (Applause)
Thank you, and congratulations to all of today’s recipients.
While it may appear that a great many students have been
recognized during today’s ceremony, those honored are only
Page 16 of 16
a small part of the large number of students who have
brought the University distinction and recognition. They will
go on to contribute to our reputation in the future. We are
proud to claim them as ours today, and we shall
undoubtedly be even more proud of them as time passes.
I would like to extend a most cordial invitation to our award
recipients and their guests, to join us for refreshments in the
Great Hall immediately after the ceremony. Faculty and
administrators will be available for photographic
opportunities with award recipients and their guests. I now
hereby declare the University's 2014 Honors and Awards
Ceremony adjourned.
