The ProfD Coordinator can put you in contact with academic staff that can provide you with advice and
assistance concerning the initial preparation of your Innovation Project Prospectus which accompanies
this application. One of these academic staff may be appropriate to nominate as your Academic
Supervisor on this form.
In addition you are required to nominate a relevant Industry/Professional Mentor who is willing to become
part of your advisory team for the duration of your candidature. This person must be a senior level person
who has a significant track record of innovation and/or change management within their industry or
profession. Their role as mentor will involve working closely with yourself and your supervisor throughout
the duration of your candidature. If your mentor wishes to become a co-supervisor they will be required to
apply for an adjunct appointment at UNE for the duration of their mentoring role.
If you are unable to finalise commitment from an Industry/Professional mentor by the time you submit your
application, you should name a provisional mentor. You may then be provisionally accepted for candidature
conditional upon you notifying your academic supervisor of the industry/professional mentor from whom
you have obtained commitment, prior to the commencement of the candidature.

STUDY PLAN
For domestic students, study is part-time off-campus commencing with coursework. This is followed by
the research phase which involves developing an Innovation Portfolio.
INNOVATION PROJECT PROSPECTUS
Please provide a Proposed Innovation Project Title which is to be supported by a brief outline (maximum
of two A4 pages) of the proposed focus for the Innovation Project for your Portfolio. This is used to
assess whether the University has advisory expertise for the duration of your candidature.
It is important to provide information about the academic staff that you have discussed your application
with and if you have identified any proposed supervisors.

REFEREE REPORTS
All applicants must provide two Referee Reports. Please note the University will not request reports on
your behalf.
Reports from one academic referee and one relevant industry/profession referee are required. For your
academic referee, it is recommended that you request a report from a current or former lecturer. Your
industry/professions referee must be: i) a senior-level person who has had a significant track record of
innovation and/or change management within their industry/profession; and ii) qualified to speak with
knowledge about your work during the qualification most relevant to this application and on your capacity
for undertaking all three stages of the ProfD program. In many cases, it would be appropriate if this
industry/profession referee was also to be your nominated industry/professions mentor.
Applicants must also provide contact details of their referees on the application form and ask the referees
to submit their written reports directly to the University on the General Referee’s Report Form which can
be downloaded from the UNE website available at

checklist on the application form will assist you with this). Wherever possible, it is best to avoid
submitting documents separately - submit them all with the application. The University will not be able

PROPOSED INDUSTRY/PROFESSION MENTOR
The proposed industry/profession mentor must meet the following criteria:




a recognised postgraduate award or equivalent involving an independent research component
(normally Master’s or doctoral level);
an acknowledged high standing in the industry/profession to which they belong;
a track record of innovation and/or management of innovation and change within the
industry/profession; and
a willingness to serve as co-advisor for the duration of your candidature.
The proposed industry/profession mentor must provide you with an abbreviated CV to attach to your
application, addressing the above criteria. If this person is to become a co-supervisor they are expected
to seek a UNE adjunct appointment for the duration of your candidature. Your academic supervisor can
facilitate the adjunct appointment application process.

REFEREES

Referees must be qualified to speak with knowledge about your work during the qualification
most relevant to this application and on your capacity for research. If you are also basing this
application on relevant work experience/training, at least one of your referees must be able to
