Introduction to Finite Elements Term Project Topic Proposal
The paper will evaluate a solid circular flat plate of the dimensions shown in Table 1, for
a 100kN annular line load. Steel will be used as the plate material and the outer diameter
of the plate will be a fixed boundary condition. To evaluate the plate the finite element
program Abaqus CAE will be used with three solid mesh element types (quadratic,
linear reduced integration, linear incompatible modes). Formula’s derived in Roark’s
Formulas of Stress and Strain will be used to verify the adequacy of the finite element
model using plate stress, displacement, and reaction forces at the boundary conditions as
points of comparison.
