Korean vets due honor Nov. 9 Fifty years ago this week, some of the people Rockdale High School students want to honor this Veterans’ Day were racing toward the border of China under the command of Gen. Douglas MacArthur. According to the Rockdale Reporter, Korean veterans will be honored at the school’s annual Veterans Day assembly, set for 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 9 in the RHS auditorium. Veterans planning to attend should send their name and address to: Rockdale High School, 1205 Murray, in care of Steve Mossbarger, according to Mark Brady, event sponsor. Many of the veterans won’t have any trouble remembering what they were doing in 1950. It was a frantic year in Korea. President Harry Truman committed United Nations troops to the conflict on June 25 after North Korean soldiers crossed the 38th parallel–the border between the two halves of Korea–and invaded the south. American, and other United Nations troops, liberated the South Korean capital of Seoul after a daring landing at Inchon Sept. 15, then raced across the border into North Korea. The North Korean capital of Pyongyang fell on Oct. 20 and US-UN troops reached the Chinese border Nov. 20. American intelligence believed that China would not enter the war. On Nov. 26, China counterattacked, starting almost three years of a bloody stalemate. Veterans of American conflicts from World War II onward have been honored at previous assemblies along with "gold star" families, those who have lost relatives in wartime military service., the Reporter stated PARADE–The Rockdale Chamber of Commerce and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6525 will sponsoring a Veterans Day parade at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 11.
