JANUARY COMPUTER CLASSES The Temple College Community Education Department will offer a variety of computer classes during the month of January. All classes are taught hands-on in an interactive teaching computer lab. Classes are open to anyone. Pre-registration is required. Courses to be offered are Windows 98/2000, Introductory Word, Intermediate Word, Beginning Excel, ACCESS, Introductory QuickBooks Pro 2000, Basic Internet, Web Page Design, and E-Commerce Basics. Windows 98/2000 will be offered in three sessions: Monday and Wednesday, Jan. 8 and 10, from 6 to 9:30 p.m.; Tuesday and Thursday, Jan. 9 and 11, from 1 to 4 p.m., or Friday, Jan. 12, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. All sessions will be at the Uptown Center. Cost is $49 plus book. The course covers the basic use of Windows 2000, including getting started, using the taskbar and start menu, working with windows, menus, toolbars, dialog boxes, the help window, My Computer and Explorer, working with files and folders, WordPad and Paint, customizing the workstation, and using Internet Explorer. Introductory Word also will be offered in three sessions: Mondays and Wednesday, Jan. 15 29, from 6 to 9 p.m.; Tuesdays and Thursday, Jan. 16 and 18, from 8 a.m. to noon, or Friday, Jan. 19, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. All sessions will be at the Uptown Center. In this class, the student will define a word processing system, create basic documents, save a document as an electronic file, close and exit a system, perform basic formatting, move and copy text, create and manage tables, control page layout, and use proofing tools. Intermediate Word will be offered on Tuesday and Thursday, Jan. 16 and 18, from 1 to 4:30 p.m. at the Uptown Center. This course is a study of production techniques including search and replace functions, headers and footers, spelling checker, mail merge, file functions, and printer set-up. It also will include AutoFormat, using and creating a template, working with tables, and printing labels and envelopes. Beginning Excel will be offered in three sessions: Mondays and Wednesdays, Feb. 5-19, from 6 to 9:10 p.m.; Tuesday and Thursday, Jan. 23 and 25, from 1 to 4:30 p.m. or Friday, Jan. 26, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. All sessions will be at the Uptown Center. This class will include instruction in terminology, machine use, program parameters, display characteristics, formatting features, mathematical formulas and functions, printing and working with charts. ACCESS will be offered on Monday, Jan. 29, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Uptown Center. This class will provide instruction in program parameters, data dictionary, optional field characteristics, calculation, constant default values, designing data entry forms, database organization and report generation. Introductory QuickBooks Pro 2000 will be offered on Fridays, Jan. 12 and 19, and from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Room 522 of the Watson Technical Center on the TC main campus. Topics in this course include getting started/setup, working with lists, bank accounts, chart of accounts, sales/invoices/accounts receivable, receive payments/make deposits, enter and pay bills, accounts payable, sales tax payable, payroll with Quickbooks, analyzing financial data/reports, customizing forms and additional tips. Basic Internet will be offered on Wednesday, Jan. 24, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Uptown Center. This class is an introduction to the Internet including e-mail, home page, and how to perform basic research to address company/business needs. The student will identify basic Internet concepts and terminology, use electronic communication, and collect and evaluate research data using the Internet. Web Page Design will be offered on Saturday, Jan. 6, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Uptown Center. This class will include instruction in more technical and in-depth uses of HTML and the Internet in business and service-related opportunities. The student will design, create, organize and publish web pages and sites. E-Commerce Basics will be offered on Wednesday, Jan. 10, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Uptown Center. This class introduces business opportunities through the Internet and how business can profit by having a home page and being connected to the Internet. The student will discover web sites appropriate for business opportunities, evaluate potential profit derived from a home page, and design and create a commercial web site. It covers such topics as how fundamental business concepts apply to the world of e-commerce, personal applications such as online banking and consumer education, Internet marketing, advertising and security.
