STEPS FOR REGISTRATION

Step 1

Submit an Application for Admission to TC.

Returning students who have been out for a year or more must submit an Application for

Readmission.

Temple College has an Open Door Admissions Policy. Anyone interested in attending Temple

College is welcome. Even adults who haven’t finished high school frequently qualify for special admission. Please contact the Admissions & Records Office at 298-8300 or see the catalog on our web site at www.templejc.edu

for more information.

New students will be accepted on conditional admission and will be given one semester to submit all required documents as part of the admission process.

Step 2

Submit official transcripts.

First-time college students must submit their official high school transcript or GED.

Transfer students must submit official transcripts from any other colleges attended.

Step 3

Take the TASP test if required for your academic program

.

All students who are seeking a degree, Level-II Certificate, or an Enhanced Skills Certificate are required to take the TASP test prior to enrolling in any college-level courses. Some students may be exempt from testing requirements. Proof of exemption/waiver is required prior to registration. See below for more information.

Possible Exemptions/Waivers:

Students with 3 hours of college credit prior to the Fall 1989 (copy of official transcript required) are exempt.

Students with military experience prior to July 1989 (copy of DD214 required) are exempt.

Students with very high ACT, SAT, or TAAS scores (copy of scores on official high school transcript or official score report is required) may be exempt. Check with Testing Center for score requirements.

Level-I Certificate-seeking students are waived.

For a more efficient and faster registration, students are strongly encouraged to test at least two weeks prior to registration.

Contact the Testing Center at (254) 298-8586 to schedule your test or to get more information on exemptions and waivers.

Step 4

Apply for financial aid.

Financial assistance at TC may be in the form of grants, scholarships, part-time jobs, or loans.

Students must meet financial eligibility requirements to receive assistance. Students seeking financial aid to pay for tuition and fees should make application at least six weeks prior to the beginning of the semester.

Step 5

Academic Advising

Advising is required for the following students:

Students who have not passed the TASP test

Freshmen students entering college for the first time

Transfer students who are degree or certificate seeking if it is their first semester at TC

All other students have the option to see an academic advisor but are not required to do so. Students who are nearing graduation are encouraged to see an advisor prior to their last semester in order to verify degree requirements and schedule any remaining courses as needed. Students in technical programs are encouraged to see the department chair for advising.

Step 6

Register for classes

. * See Important Dates information for dates/times.

Early Registration

Early Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. Students who want to see an advisor need to stop in the Advising Center to make an appointment. Students in technical programs are encouraged to make an appointment with the department chair for advising. Students who feel comfortable in scheduling their own classes may come directly to the Admissions and Records office for registration. Avoid long lines by using Early Registration.

Regular Registration

Regular Registration is by appointment for the first two days. All students must make an appointment to register even if they do not opt to see an advisor. Please stop by the Advising

Center to make an appointment for registration. Open registration is on the third day.

Late Registration

Late Registration is available for those students who were not able to register during earlier times. Please note that some classes will be full and it will be extremely difficult to get your preferred schedule if you wait.

Step 7

Pay tuition and fees by deadline date.

ALL STUDENTS, including students with full scholarships and/or grants , MUST PROCESS through the Cashier’s Office at One College Centre to pay tuition and fees, or for Early

Registration may either call 298-8611 if paying by credit card or may mail payment so it is received by deadline date. Payments may be mailed to:

Temple College, Attn: Cashier’s Office, 2600 S. First Street, Temple, TX 76504.

Payment is what completes the registration process and holds your schedule of classes for you.

Students’ classes will be dropped for non-payment. The payment deadline dates are:

Early Registration – August 12, 2002

Regular/Late Registration – Payment due at time of registration.

RESIDENCY INFORMATION

Each student must complete a residency questionnaire and an

Oath of Residency when applying to Temple College. If there are questions about a student’s residency classification, the student will be asked to show proof of residency. The student is responsible for enrolling under the proper resident classification and for providing documentation as required by the institution. If there are any questions about Texas or district residency, the student must seek clarification from the

Director of Admissions and Records prior to enrollment.

As a general rule, students who have resided in Texas for 12 consecutive months and have been gainfully employed are classified as Texas residents. Students who are under the age of 18 have their residency determined by the residency of their parent or legal guardian. The parent or guardian must have resided in the state of Texas for 12 consecutive months and be gainfully employed.

Students who meet the requirements for state residency and have resided in and been gainfully employed in the Temple

College District for 6 months will be classified as in-district students for residency students.

Students who do not meet the qualifications for Texas residency will be classified as nonresidents. Students who do not reside in the Temple College District will be classified as out-of-district students. Students classified as nonresidents or out-of-district upon first enrollment at Temple College are presumed to be nonresidents or out-of-district for the period during which they continue as students. Students who were classified as nonresidents upon initial enrollment who reside in the state and have been gainfully employed for a period of

12 consecutive months may petition for reclassification as residents for tuition purposes. Students who were initially classified as out-of-district students may also petition for reclassification upon residing in the district for 6 months.

However, students moving to the state of Texas strictly for educational purposes are not eligible for state or in-district residency classification.

Students who desire to be reclassified must submit a petition of reclassification prior to the official census date of the term in order to have their residency reviewed. All petitions submitted after the official census date will not be considered until the subsequent term.

Please check the catalog on the Temple College web site at www.templejc.edu for more information on residency.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

TC DISTRICT INFORMATION

The Temple College District is coterminous with the city limits of Temple and the Temple Independent School District.

Once students have met the state residency requirements, they can verify their in-district residency by presenting one or more of the following types of documentation. This documentation must show an in-district address for the 6 months immediately prior to enrollment:

1.

A permanent Texas driver's license with current address

2.

A lease agreement which includes the student's name

3.

A utility bill

4.

A voter's registration card

5.

A payroll check stub

6.

A property tax statement showing payment of Temple

College District taxes.

MILITARY PERSONNEL &

DEPENDENTS

Persons in military service are presumed to maintain during their entire period of active service the same legal residence which was in effect at the time of entering the service.

Education Code 54.058(b) provides that military personnel assigned to duty within the State of Texas, their spouse and their dependent children, shall be entitled to pay the same tuition as a resident of Texas regardless of the length of their physical presence in the state. To be entitled to pay resident tuition, such military personnel shall submit at the time of each enrollment a statement from their commanding officer or personnel officer certifying that they are then assigned duty in

Texas and that the same will be in effect at the time of such enrollment

INFORMATION WHICH MAY CHANGE

This schedule contains policy, regulations, and procedures in effect at the time of publication. The

College reserves the right to make changes at any time to reflect current Board policies, administrative regulations and procedures, and applicable state and federal regulations. This schedule is for information purposes only and does not constitute a contract.

ANNUAL NOTICE TO STUDENTS

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) affords students certain rights with respect to their education records. They are:

(1) The right to inspect and review the student’s education records within 45 days of the day Temple College receives a request for access.

Students should submit to the Director of Admissions and

Records, dean, head of the academic department, or other appropriate official, written requests that identify the record(s) they wish to inspect. The College official will make arrangements for access and notify the student of the time and place where the records may be inspected. If the records are not maintained by the college official to whom the request was submitted, that official shall advise the student of the correct official to whom the request should be addressed.

(2) The right to request the amendment of the student’s education records to ensure that they are not inaccurate, misleading, or otherwise in violation of the student’s privacy or other rights.

Students may ask Temple College to amend a record that they believe is inaccurate or misleading. They should write the College official responsible for the record, clearly identify the part of the record they want to change, and specify why it is inaccurate or misleading.

If Temple College decides not to amend the record as requested by the student, the College will notify the student of the decision and advise the student of his or her right to a hearing regarding the request for amendment. Additional information regarding the hearing procedures will be provided to the student when notified of the right to a hearing.

(3) The right to consent to disclosures of personally identifiable information contained in the student’s education records, except to the extent that FERPA authorizes disclosure without consent.

One exception which permits disclosure without consent is disclosure to school officials with legitimate educational interests. A school official is a person employed by the

College in an administrative, supervisory, academic or research, or support staff position; a person or company with whom the College has contracted (such as an attorney, auditor, collection agent or National Student Loan

Clearinghouse); a person serving on the Board of Trustees; or a student serving on an official committee, such as disciplinary or grievance committee, or assisting another school official in performing his or her tasks.

A school official has a legitimate educational interest if the official needs to review an educational record in order to fulfill his or her professional responsibility.

Upon request, Temple College discloses education records without consent to officials of another school in which a student seeks or intends to enroll.

(4) The right to file with the U.S. Department of Education a complaint concerning alleged failures by Temple

College to comply with the requirements of FERPA.

The name and address of the Office that administers

FERPA is:
