Trends in Academic Success/Failure in the First Year, New Freshmen and Transfers 2001-2007

This is an update adding 2007-8 data to an earlier study, reported below.
In October 2007, at the request of Arts & Sciences advising, we did a study of trends in academic
probation/suspension among A & S students in the last several years. Later we received a request from
another college to do a similar analysis of their students, so we decided to do it by college for all Boulder
colleges. This presented a small problem: For the A & S study we used SIS Academic Action codes, which
we download to frozen end-of-term data files each term. Because other colleges have not consistently used
the SIS codes over the years, for this study we used a 2.0 cumulative GPA – the criterion used by most
colleges -- as a proxy.
Although exceptions are sometimes made for individual cases, in general A & S places students on
probation if their cumulative GPA goes below 2.0, and suspends them if it remains below 2.0 after the
following term. Therefore, for the present study of new fall freshmen and transfers from all colleges, we
divided them into 4 groups:

Cumulative GPA below 2.0 in either fall or spring (roughly corresponding to “on probation at
some point during the year);
Cumulative GPA below 2.0 in fall and still below 2.0 in spring (suspended);
Cumulative GPA below 2.0 in fall, above 2.0 in spring (on probation but then restored to good
standing; this group is included in group 1);
Cumulative GPA below 2.0 in fall, no term GPA in spring (on probation and dropped out).
