Biblical Theology of Matthew's Gospel

I. Purpose of course
A. To give students an understanding and appreciation for Matthew’s Biblical Theology of Jesus
as the leader of the New Exodus.
B. To use the lens of the New Exodus to faithfully interpret the individual parts of the Gospel.
C. To understand the way in which Matthew uses the Old Testament to shed light on the person
and work of Christ as a second Moses.
D. To grow in appreciation and personal responsiveness for the Gospel message.
II. Course requirements
Required reading: Ulrich Luz, The Gospel of Matthew (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press,
1995) 165pp.
Paper: Students will write an 8-10 page paper on any passage in Matthew’s gospel. Papers will
interact with journal articles and commentaries on Matthew. In addition to the interpretation of
the chosen passage, the student will also show how the passage contributes to the overarching
biblical theology of the gospel. The paper will be 100% of your grade.
